i put my explorer II up for trade for a water detector and so far my offers have been a new in the box never used 1280x, and a used CZ-20 8 out of 10 shape, a few other used 1280(s) and one whites beach hunter ID with the "300" coil in 7 out of 10 condition. im new to this and have no idea what detector is good and what isn't. i would like an Excal, but their just a tad to expensive for me. anyways its thinking time so many offers dont know what to pick. can someone help me pick???

If you are hunting in the fresh water the 1280-x is a pretty good machine. I had good results using one for several years of lake hunting. If you are hunting in the salt water I would not recommend the 1280-x, it does not perform well there or in the black sand. I use a DF PI detector at the beach. True, it doesn't have "real" discrimination abilities (although the signals can help there) but it detects pretty deep, is completely waterproof and is much less expensive than an Excal. If you look around a bit you can find one that is fairly new for half the price of an Excal. The 2 year warranty is transferable. I believe that the Excal has a 1 year warranty and I hear that their customer service isn't the greatest. I don't want to sound like I'm putting down the Excal. It's a "great" detector and I would have one if I had money to spare.
Being a PI machine, the DF would probably not be a good choice in "trashy" areas. It is at its best in lower trash, wet sand and water environments. The reasons that you can find good deals on these machines is because some people don't like to deal with the trash and some people seem to have trouble (I don't) pinpointing with the larger coil. The only thing that I don't care for about the DF is that the coil is positively buoyant which to me is more of an inconvenience that a deal breaker. Good luck!

I have been watching your posts for a long time. I admire your dedication to the hobby. I wish my sons had your enthusiasm for the hobby. Have you given any thoughts to buying an older Sovereign and slapping it in a a waterproof box? I hear Tesoro makes a fairly good water detector for the price. I almost bought the Detector Pro Wader myself. I opted for the HH PI instead. A PI in fresh water sounds like a bunch of digging though. You can talk to MR. Bill about the Wader. He will tell you exactly how it is. If you can build a great looking sifter I would think you could waterproof a Sovereign. There has been a couple of posts in the last week on that subject. Good Luck. Be sure to keep us informed on your purchase.

I don't know if your hunting fresh or salt water beaches, but the Tesoro Tiger Shark is a good fresh water machine. Also, you might want to look at Detector Pro machines.

ya know Goodmore my dad got me into this hobby about three years ago and quit on me about a year and a half ago or so. im still going strong with the hobby because i love it. i go an get my permit every year from the state park office and i ride my bike 3 miles or more each weekend and some week days. i dont have the greatest bike so i take bungy cords and strap a plastic crate of the front of my bike. put my detector and everthing i need and go. works for me and i get the exercise riding so far! just shows ya if someone likes to do something what they will do. plus metal detecting keeps me out of trouble!:detecting:

Whites BHID. I am only speaking from experience. Have not used an excal or anything else. I want an excal...lol. 1280 is awsome in freshwater...does not fare well in salt water.

I use the Infinium L/S.

Got mine last year and found a $5300.00 Diamond ring on the third trip to the water.

Found 52 other rings and three necklaces. I like the fact that I can also use it on land in highly mineralized areas. Check out the Garret website and watch the video. The machine has an "Iron Check" feature which helps alot. Not all scientific and nerdy, turn on, set threshold, Lock ground tracking, and you are off finding the gold and silver you have been wanting. Works great in black sand, can be set to eliminate power line interferences, what more could you want?
You won't break the bank, about $1250.00, should get at least a 15 % discount from most dealers. After a few times out you should have it paid for with your finds.

Hey, rent one from a dealer for the day and see if u like it.

I'll be at the beach with mine!
