what headphones do you use

i'm curious as to how many guys here use high dollar headphones versus guys that use cheaper headphones. i have never purchased a set of expensive headphones except for a set of depthmaster headphones several years back. do you really have to have a 100.00 pair of headphones or will a 40.00 set do the job? i have had people tell me i need to buy the expensive ones and others tell me not to waste my money.......so what is the real story here? i have hunted for 30 years with calrads and audiophone II headphones and always found my share of coins, but if i'm missing deep old coins because i have an inferior set of headphones i would sure like to know. so what do YOU use for headphones and why do you feel they are the best headphones? i hunt with a tesoro silver umax and fisher cz detectors and would like to hear what would be the best for my machines...thanks for your help.........roger

I'm just using koss w/ volume control cheapos.... I also use radio shack $10 behind the ear phones with volume control...I've had the expensive ones , they do sound better...my last was Rattlers...
I prefer light weight over better sound though.

I do just as well with the cheapos too.

I'm also curious about folks' thoughts on this subject. I have been running a cheap set of behind-the-ear phones and they work fine thought the lack of volume control is annoying. I have considered the Detector Pro Treasure Ears phones as a cost effective pair, whereby I could buy two sets for the cost of one set of Grey Ghosts. I have also thought about the CalRads for even less $$. Cost is an important factor as I need 2 pairs of headphones to outfit us both. DH also is considering looking into wireless headphones--does anyone make a set of wireless headphones that would work with a Minelabs Xterra 305?

I use 2 different sets. Sun Ray Pro Golds, and Killer B's WASP's. I have bad hearing and like the sound, so that is what I use, Beale.

I have a pair of the Depth Master Audio Phone II's that I never used because I couldn't stand the tinny sound they produced and they were very uncomfortable. I used a pair of cheap radio shack phones with the foam ear pads that had a volume control and they sounded really good. My wife had them when we got married in 96 and I liberated them for metal detecting. They finally deterioated last year so I wanted a new pair of phones. I have used other cheap walkman type phones with the same foam type ear pads also, some sound better than others. With some, they never got loud enough with my whites and I had to use a mono adapter to get them to be compatible with my whites, but they always seemed to work pretty well with my Tesoro's.
My wife gave me a pair of Killer B's this past xmas. I love them. They are more comfortable than I thought they would be. My ears do not get bothered wearing them for several hours. The sound quality is better than most of the cheap headphones I have used. And they work with all my detectors, no adapters needed.
So, do you have to buy expensive headphones, not really. I would still be totally fine with the Radio Shack phones if they hadn't fallen apart. Am I glad the wife gave me a pair of Killer B's, you bet I am.
I would think you could take your metal detector into Radio Shack and test some of the headphones they have on display to see how they sound and fit first. For me sound was very important.

Oh, I also had a pair of the Calrads that came with my Garrett GTA1000 years ago and didn't like them either. When I sold my Garrett, I gave them away with it.

I am sooo lucky my wife doesn't read this forum, we got married in 91 not 96. I have to keep track of this stuff better or I am going to be in big trouble.

Koss QZ99. Comfortable ear cups for me. A little warm on hot days. Cord is a little long. Depending on detector, I may wrap it once or twice around the shaft to take up length. Good sound isolation from the outside noises and they respond well with good clear sound in this application. The audiophile reviews for these phones say they fall short on bass. Since bass isn't thumped out by the metal detector circuits, they work just fine in this application. They are switchable stereo / mono so they can be set for the different drive circuits used on various brands of detectors. They have volume control and give a lot of volume if you want it.

Do a web search and you can find them just under $40 to your door.

The cheap ones will work but................its about comfort with me. I bought a Killer B headset and am not looking back. I do not regret the purchase for one minute.
I like them very well, they are comfortable and low profile on your head compared to the cheap over sized headphones. :detecting:

I have several Gray Ghosts. Nugget Busters and the original. They sound better and seal against outside noise more efficiently than the Calrads, Garretts, and Whites I've used in the past. Am I finding targets I would have missed with the other phones? Probably not many, but the other phones sound hollow and less crisp, especially on the marginal signals. My two cents.

What do y'all think of the Stinger/Rattler one eared style of headphones? I like the idea of being able to hear what/who is around me, but I also find it odd to have the sound in only 1 ear. I tried this with my existing phones by offsetting one side to not hear through it. Do you get used to hearing the beep in only one side?

thanks for your replies guys. seems very few of us use high quality headphones with our detectors. if i had deep pockets i'm sure i would probably own several sets of high end phones but since my pockets are pretty shallow i think i will just stick with what i have for the time being. i might buy a better set down the road. thanks again for your answers.

For corded, I use SunRay Gold Pro, and back up is Rats
For Vision/V3, it's the wireless they made for it.
Home use, Grado RS-1, and Bose for back up.

Two pairs of mine were picked up used by watching Ebay consistently. As to the question about the one sidedphones, I think I could use them quite well with a bit of practice and as long as there wasn't a lot of outside noise interfering.

I like the Ratphones for sound quality the best of those I've used, including Grey Ghosts and Jimmy Sierra Maxiphones.

Unfortunately, they're no longer being made.
