What do you tell a starry eyed new detectorist ??

Tell him the truth. Tell him to enjoy it for what it is...a hobby. If he does research and finds good spots, he has the potential for good finds, if he doesn't and just hunts parks, etc, there's slight potential. No matter though, he has to put the coil over the target to find it. Primarily though, practice our code of ethics and proper recovery techniques to promote our hobby.

a nice fluffy well ploughed field make life much easier to dig and fiind

DirtAngler & targets, excellent points- I agree whole heartedly and give the big Amen! On rereading my post, it was a bit more negative than I intended. I think I am still having 'boom, baby!' nightmares. For fresh air and appreciating the world we live in, its a great pastime. Do the time and work and you will find great treasures, but usually of a personal nature rather than a wealth builder. That is where I was coming from. You just can't say it all in a post (or a sermon and many try!).

PS Elton, thank you for the kind words! t

He thought all would be Silver & Gold .......He traded his detector for a Motor Scooter !!

Thanks everyone ...................

Well, detecting is not for everyone. I enjoy telling or showing a newbie what I can, but have to admit I'm not devastated whenever a member of the competition drops out.

I would simply say that if you are hunting expecting to find a fortune you are hunting for the wrong reason and need to sell the detector. If you are hunting for the fun, the thrill of the hunt, or for the peace and relaxation that detecting provides then you will have found a lifelong enjoyable hobby.
