Just thought I would make a point about choosing your discrimination pattern... The screen below shows the typical accepted areas, in yellow, for a common "coins only" program. What I did was illustrate several different places where many different old and valuable targets can read....

Starting from the top:
Dark Blue.... old seated dime
Light Green.... old brass token, silver 3 cent
Dark Green.... old indian head cent from 1860's
to 1870's
Brown.... large, old brass item down deep
Dark Purple.... old button, fat indian or flying eagle cent
Light Purple.... 5$ gold coin, warnickel
Orange.... 1$ gold coin, nickel 3 cent piece
Red.... shield nickel
This is just a sample of where these items can read on your screen.... and the older and deeper they get, the more they can vary. Also, a lot of gold items are rejected....
How many of the above do you think you've passed over already???
Hunting in iron mask at around -8 to -10 will accept all of the above... if the trash gets bothersome, you can set your gain at 5 and train your ears to listen for the softer deeper targets to dig. At any rate, I would hope that if you get an area that gives up nice old coins that read in the coin ranges... that you re-hunt it without discrimination to see what other nice finds there are lurking out of the coin range.
I don't want to sound like I'm bashing anyone who hunts with coins only patterns... i just want to tease your brain a little... maybe stuff a question mark or two in there <IMG SRC="/forums/images/smile.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":)"> HH, Mike.

Mike, I would hate to leave any old coins behind. So is that the key, softer deeper targets and being disiplined enough to stay away from the louder tones in trash filled sites?

Mike, I have the manual Andy's book and have read the post a kazillion times, but I must tell you. I'm learning faster with your screens that you are posting and your techniques. Thank you very much. Mike
 
Will your screen vary with the sunray 8" coil? What gain do you use with the 8" coil as compared to the 10.5"? Would you also turn down the gain on the 8" to eliminate trash and listen for the soft signal? Thanks for the help.
 
Although the majority of my coin finds read where they should, I would have hated to leave some of the stuff that didnt behind, had a fairly shallow large cent that was reading very steady just under where the T is on the top your example. after digging found it was above a big piece of cast iron. I am sure any disc at all would have knocked it out. Main thing I think is everyone should listen to everything, even those sweet steady low tones turn out to be good stuff, good sounding targets tend to be good...I know the amount of trash can dictate how much you want to hear and a pattern might be the way to go ,but the only real way to get to everything is slowly getting that junk out of the way...might take some time, but in the long run it may end up worth it.. in the mean time hit the cleaner areas and get those deep good ones running iron mask that we and others missed with other detectors:)
 
Would this mean leaving Sens in Auto -16 start up or as in your screen should it be Manual 22?
 
The sensitivity setting is unimportant to this info, I was just using my plain screen that had the sensitivity at an arbitrary setting.
 
I don't have the 8 inch coil... but the point of the post is that many different goodies will hit nearly anywhere and many extra factors can further alter where they hit. HH, Mike.
 
As a rule, yes.... but you have to be certain as to where the average depth of trash is and the average depth of older stuff is. I've hunted many places where trash was only 2 inches deep and old nickels and indian cents were 3 inches deep and deeper. This is why if you are unsure about the ground you are hunting dig some of the shallower trash targets to get a feel for how deep they run. HH, Mike.

I agree completely with your screen pattern..and usually only hunt with mine with a pattern that resembles the Iron Mask Screen now.
I do dig my share of junk..and was wondering how your Truck Bed was faring? Bet these guys would get a kick outta seeing your truck bed. C'Mon...take a pic!
!!?or did ya wipe out all that history you had riding around in it for your trip?!!
