What am I missing ?

This question is for all you MD'ers out there who use or have used other detector brands besides Garrett. When I am reading general metal detecting forums and the discussions are on which detector to buy? which detector goes deepest? why is this detector better than this one? The Garrett name seldom is mentioned. I have been using a Garrett for about 8 yrs and since its the only detector I have used, except for a Heathkit I built about 15 yrs ago and a short spurt with a BH quickdraw which I don't count, I was just wondering, What am I missing?

My conclusion after using many different detectors (different brand and models) is that every detector has its pros and cons.
And most cons can be overcome if the detectorist knows his machine.
I have as many finds with the Garrett ace 250 as with my other high priced detectors. The good stuff is not always 10" down. The right coil for the right area seems to be more important than what brand you use.

I just wrote a booklet about the Ace 250 what is can do and what it can't. That would help you with your decision if that Garrett is right for you. If you want a copy email me: detectorandy@yahoo.de

It's 3$ to cover my production cost and includes shipping.

I have been using Garrett's since the 70's. I have grown use to them and really don't have any desire to try the others. I know the other major brands are probably good detectors. I look at it as I do my gun, I want to know it inside and out, and the more I practice with it and only it, the better I get with it. It's a part of me. There are some people that can trade around and do good with all. But for me, I like sticking with what I am comfortable with, and that's a Garrett.

They aren't the heaviest, or the lightest, or the most expensive or the cheapest, or the deepest or the shallowest the best or the worst.

But if you look at all the Garrett forums, you will find sooooooo many fantastic finds from people around the globe, both on land and water. And the people who chose to hunt with a Garrett just love to go out and hunt. It doesn't matter if you are a relic hunter, coin hunter, water hunter etc, we all support each other because we have learned that the true treasure is the friends we make and the hunt that make us special. We dont need to find thousand dollar items to fit in, (although many of us have) we just enjoy the hunt.

What is there not to like about Garrett.......

I have been in this hobby 44 years, written about it for 25 years or so and have used about everything and field tested most of them. You ain't missing anything. Garrett users just aren't blow hards. Most of those talkers you speak of don't usually know what they are talking about to begin with.:)

Also the fact that Charles Garrett has been metal detecting for 40 years. He should know what is needed in a detector and how to build them. Garrett is the only machine for me.
Just My Opinion
God Bless

Yeah I've got a buddy who still hunts with an old Compass 77 IB from about 1972 and if you go hunting with him with your new " Golly Gee Whiz" beeper he will thumop your nub most of the time. Detecting is 90% operator, 10% machine.

Bill

Here here John! I would say that Garrett users are not stuffy butts.

We are open - nature loving people. We are fresh air smellers. Garrett detectors are one with nature. John posted a picture of a squirrel using an Ace 250. What more do you need - what more do you need.....................the end.

Yeah the coil is the heart of any machine. The right coil for the right situation makes or breaks a detector.

Bill

And the circuit boards, their components and coils are built and assembled in Texas. The customer service is excellent too

many years ago i read an interview with Charles Garrett in one of the treasure magazines.he was asked if he thought that his machine was deeper than a fisher 1265x which was the going machine at the time.his reply was it could possibly be in certain conditions.he said i almost wore out a 1265x and it is a good machine.i did not build mine for depth alone.i build every Garrett to perform the best in every condition so in one area it might go a little deeper but mine will perform good all over.i cannot quote his exact words but i bought a Garrett and never looked back.and i still have them.

I am sorry, but I find some humor in a Canadian claiming made in America(Texas). I always try to buy American. Back in the 70's I bought an American Motors Jeep. Found out it was made in Windsor, Canada. I found that humorous too.
90% operator doesn't give much credit to the manufacture for there 10% detector. I do have great respect for Mr. Garrett and the heart he has for the hobby. I can tell he has a great heart for people also. To me that is a great selling point. His Ace 250 has proven itself to me over and over again. Hey, I am part of this commercial.
I may drive a Gm. but that doesn't mean there aren't some good fords out there.....somewhere. I drive a Ford too. It was a good price and has it purpose. I feel the same about MDers. If it is a good deal and it has it purpose. That is why I own an Ace 250. For my purpose it is the best detector. If that day comes that my situation changes and I need another detector, I will buy American. I will compare and buy the best MDer that will suit my purpose. That may be a Garrett or it may not be a Garrett. Tell me none of you have ever owned another brand of MDer. Competition is good. It keep the standards high.

I've owned and field tested about every detector out there. For a long time I was a Compass fan until they went out of business. Owned and used Tesoros for many years ( they are still a great detector ) but for some years I have favored Garrett. They are as good as anything out there and better than some and the folks at Garrett are the best to deal with.

Bill

And they care more about keeping their customers, and keeping them happy. Garrett makes a great detector but keeping a solid customer base is what makes Garrett great.

Bill

You have found a deeper detecting unit, but that's not all to look for in a modern metal detector.
Even depth is not always a good feature. Do you realy want to dig over 10" for a coin ?

- What's the price of the detector
- What kind and how many batteries does it need.
- How long is battery run time ?
- Can you buy a charger for it ?
- How is weight and balance ?
- How do they handle warranty repair ?
- What feature does it have you may need ?
- What is the resell value if you have to sell it ?

I thing you get the point.

The fact that Mr.Charles Garrett has a heart of gold and a great philanthropist is also one of the reasons I support him. Of course his metal detectors are top notch too
