A woman friend from my club wrote to me saying that she politely and quickly answers a question, then if they try to chat too much she says, "okay, well I gotta get going. The parking meter is running!" which she says gets rid of them quickly. (I like that idea.)

The Bulgarian claims (but I'm not sure I believe him!) that he says, "I can't talk; I'm working. I have to clean up all the jagged metal so kids don't hurt themselves." I told him that then everybody would be handing him cans and other trash...I've had kids do that to me before.

Sometimes I feel like responding to the "what are you doing?" question with, "I WAS enjoying the peace and quiet." (Hint - Hint!)

I usually look at them and do my best Quasimodo impersonation and send them running. Or tell them I'm looking for mines.

But seriously, if you get in the habit of saying "Yes, I DO find good stuff" and "No, today just a few coins, nothing GOOD...but it's good clean fun anyway." and then "Well, let me get to it...not much time left to detect." and move on. You have to politely cut them off. You can do it.
