I've been in Florida for over a month and a half and have met many metal detectorists. Most are hunting the wet sand and dry sand and very few hunting the water.
I ask why they hunt only the beach and not the water and the comments are usually..."My wet suit must have shrunk because it does not fit any more. I don't have one that fits and so I stay on land. "
I did not want to tell them that wet suits don't shrink. It is that they have gotten fatter.
I also have noticed that the traffic on the way to the beaches are usually pretty bad with sitting in traffic or waiting for someone to leave the beach to get a parking spot sometimes taking hours to get a spot.
The other day I saw a MD'er who was riding a bicycle to Siesta beach. He passed me by and it was over an hour later before I was able to get to the beach. He had a small trailer attached to his bicycle and his scoop and Excalibur was poking out the top of it.
I had a chance to talk to him and he told me that he often gets to the beach faster than anyone and that he does not have to worry about parking spaces. He also told me that he stays in pretty good shape by bike riding to the beach.
He told me that he drives as close to the beaches he hunts without getting into heavy traffic. He then parks his car and loads up his bike and trailer and he wears his wet suit while riding. Tells me that he loses weight faster while wearing the wet suit. Probably water weight.
After thinking about what he said, I thought it was a good idea. Not that my wet suit is getting tight. I just like to get to the beach without sitting in traffic. And it will help me stay in shape so I can hunt longer too! Talk about killing two birds with one stone.
