I have $399 to spend and I am naturally thinking about the 17" coil as spring is on its way. I know this topic has probably been beat to death, then again for good measure, but does anyone regret buying one? Do you find yourself using it more that the stock coil in applicable situations? (Not talking about trashy parks here) Is the 17" coil pretty much your best friend? If you would rather redirect me to a thread than answer my question, that works too. Thanks and happy hunting.

Happy birthday.

Odd you have $399 exactly to spend. You planned that didn't you?

I use it more than the other two combined . It is a grounds covering delite with extreme depth in those more open sites. And it hits on edge coins like no other for me .It is also a snap to pinpoint with considering it's size .

I'm old and arthritic. Bottom line, the 17" coil was a killer at the end of each swing when I reversed direction. I couldn't carry enough pain meds with me. I traded mine for the 6" DD and have never looked back.......I love that little 6" coil. But, this is me. I know a LOT of folks on here swear by the 17" and, surely, for good reason. If you are the least bit aged or have arthritis, I would suggest finding one you could try out for a few hours, before laying your money down. It does cover some real estate, no doubt! If it is what you want, I hope you are happy with it!

Take care.....

Thanks Roland. Turning 27 and all the joints seem to be ok yet. I have the 6" as well. Great coil. Just looking to cover more ground faster in the big yards and on the beach.

Well, you are still a puppy! Many happy returns, I wish you the best for many more birthdays to come.

The 17 in coil is an absolute whiz at the beaches and most of the fields here in Delaware. I wear a ProSwing vest so the weight was not an issue, putting it back in the carry case was an issue, the coil didn't fit....

Congrats on turning 27, I recently celebrated the 37th anniversary of my 27th birthday myself .

Cheers

I am sure mine has cost me more finds that it has gained me.. I still have it and use it occasionally but wish I had never bought it....wildherre

I on the other hand attribute a lot of my finds to the 17 inch coil.granted I am almost exclusively in farm fields where the targets are far and few between.I can't say that it has ever found a target that was deeper than I would have got with the stock coil.I haven't taken my 17 off since I bought it mid last year.

Haha I hope I will be swinging that long!

Again thanks to all for the input, will update with a decision!

I'm curious as to why you feel the 17" coil has cost you more finds than gained you, if you don't mind my asking? I've been wanting to buy the 17" coil and have been planning to in the near future so any info would be helpful!

Thanks

I hunt almost entirely prehunted areas....Id say 95% of my finds are in the 6" to 9" depth range and in close proximity to a nail or other trash...Not necessarily in heavy trash area where you would need a 6" coil .... If i a target was out in the open without trash, any decent detector made in the last 20 years would have already gotten it. The key for me is the greatest depth with the best separation and unmasking ability.. The 17 shines open areas and areas with fresh drops like a beach or previously undetected area but wont find the stuff I'm looking for.... In open areas with little trash and no emi I will often use a T2 in all metal mode or boost mode especially in areas where you cant get the coil close to the ground where it will easily out depth a CTX . The CTX is a finesse machine, able to work in high emi areas and pick the goodies out of the trash , the 17" just takes away some of the CTXs edge in unmasking and accurate pinpointing that I need, Say in an area that has been detected with a Explorer or Etrac..... I have hunted with someone with a 17 on and me with my 11 and was able to locate deep targets the 17 couldn't..... A bigger coil can have an advantage on on edge coins.. There is a reason most detectors come with a 10-11 inch coil, it just works best in most locations and situations...... $399 is a lot of money for a coil, that is more than a lot of detectorists spend on their whole detecting program.. I hope everyone buys one and leaves it on, when I finally mosey my butt over that area there will still be some stuff left for me....wildherre

Thanks for your insight and info wildhere!! That's a lot to think about! I've been wanting to get more depth in our highly mineralized soil in the Pacific NW and have seen others ask the question about the larger coil masking targets because of it. I guess I'll have to spend my money and take my chances on it at some point! I'm not a youngster anymore either and have to have concerns about what a coil that large is going to mean for my beat up body! Not that I'm in that bad of shape, but I played hard and took some hard knocks and now I'm feeling them in my bones.....like the Doctors always told me I would when I got older, not that I would have ever listened.

Happy Birthday Nolanation! let us know how you like your new coil if you get one! I hope it works great for you!

Happy Birthday to you!

Nice! Go forth and dig!

Sure glad it's your birthday again..The alternative isn't good !!.....

Happy Birthday........... Glad you got the coil....
