Well my AT PRO arrived today and already I have a complaint..

I was seriously thinking about an AT Pro , but I think I will let you guys tackle it ...... I have BIG hands and little patience .....Not a good combination ..... It would have to be made of unbreakable plastic because I can already envision it flying across the room after me trying to get this thing connected ......It's not for me ....Thanks for the explanations , I appreciate it ....I'll stick with what Ive got ....Jim

From all that I've read here about the new AT Pro, I've changed my mind about buying one. I use the Ace 250 and everything fits perfectly whenever I assemble it. My original complaint about this model was the lack of a volume control, a fairly inexpensive extra that could have been added without increasing the overall price by much. If there is anyone from Garrett who reads these posts, take notice. No matter how well your new detector works for those who have managed to piece it together, there is absolutely no excuse whatsoever for poor design and shoddy workmanship. Here in England, these complaints would not get by the local trading standards office.:ukflag:

Piece together. Shoddy workmanship. Those are some big accusations from some one who has never used one. The AT is much more detector than the 250. You say you like it it is the same company. Do not knock it if you have not tried it. Working on my second set of batteries and have not had any problems it runs great.

Maybe you should stop reading the negitive post as you are being decieved by negitive crap...kinda like Obama decieving the US of A.

Get one for yourself and you will see it is a high quality machine...that being said, can't please everyone, some people just wont like it, like I dont like MINELAB'S.

I have yet to see a water proof detector that didn't benefit from a small dab of Silicone Grease to the connector threads.

This is why they make Leatherman's. Once you get it together you need to keep it that way unless you change coils. Either way, Silicone Grease helps on the threads just like it does on my Excal, and Tiger Shark.

I'm in an area where I would be doing a LOT of different hunting , and would probably be changing coils at least once in a day's hunt .....I would be going from the beach to the woods in a lot of cases ...or to open space in parks , and then into the woods .... I make a long day of it .... After seeing the picture of the location of this connector, I know without even thinking about it that it would not work for me ....It's like Uncle Willy said ...Did they really think that water would not get to it if they hid the connector ? ...... Is this connector THAT fragile that it has to be surrounded by plastic to protect it ? ..... If this is the case , leave the connector " as is " and send along a tool to fit over the connector to make it easier to twist the connector in place without having to resort to needle nose pliers .......If your fingers are small enough , I'm sure that it's not THAT bad , but if you have big fingers ,it looks like it makes for an almost impossible connection .... This is suppose to be FUN , remember ? .....JIm

Whoever designed the idiot earphone and cable connectors needs to go back to design/engineering kindergarten for a term or two. I couldn't even get the knobs started or screwed on even with my skinny fingers. I had to use needle-nosed pliers. Why would anyone with an ounce of common sense or the I.Q. of an amoeba bury them inside and up tight against the side of a ninety degree recess. Hopefully my future assessments will be more favorable. Can't get outside as it is pouring with flooding all over the place so I'll have to play with it in the house and see if there are any quirks lurking inside it somewhere.

Tis a nice looking machine but they could have made the lettering on the face bigger for us old farts with tired eyes. HA. And us old farts make up a large percentage of their customers. More to come.

Bill

It is so easy even a cave man can do it.

Ah it ain't that bad. It's a great detector that supercedes any minor design glitches. Just use needle-nosed pliers like I did or you may get one of the easy ones. I just think the sealer on my threads was too thick but still there is limited room for one's fingers to grasp the knobs.

Bill

I wouldn't hesitate to get one. Don't think this problem is widespread except for the lack of room for one's fingers to turn the knobs. It's a great machine.

Bill

Nah it's just a little bump in the road. Once you get it hooked up you don't have to fool with it anymore unless you're changing coils a lot.

Yeah it is in an asinine location.

Can't imagine what they were thinking when they decided that putting it there was OK

They had it in the perfect place in the GTI's no need to move it from there. After all, if it ain't broke don't fix it.

You don't really think that they are going to change anything do you? They are going to sell every AT they can make. I will be getting one. I will mod the shaft or buy an aftermarket shaft, I will get or make an adapter for the phones and I will like it. You're going to have a long wait if you are waiting for Garrett to tweak the cuff position, put a lock on the shaft, or change the HP connector... IMO.

This sounds like a very good detector for the price.

J

I think it must be designed for left handed hunters. It is not going to stop me from buying one but I really do not like the idea of the HP jack on the rear right... makes no sense to me.

J

That is why I stay far away from golf...

Is it the HP connector or the coil connector that is hard to get to and screw in?

I am with you on that one nothing is going to change. They are selling them faster than they can make them do not see any changes coming any time soon. AT PRO 2 in several years maybe. No detector is perfect but this one comes pretty close and is a HE!! of a buy at the asking price. Don't tell Garret though they may go up on the price. If you are waiting for the new mold then you may be waiting a while. The only thing I found that I could not live with was the headphones took me about 15min to fix that problem.

They are both the same coil has four pins Headphone has two. So in theory the coil should be harder to line up that is why I used it on the video. The connectors are the same.
Think some may have had a little paint on the threads that made them harder to screw in the first time. After a time or two every one should be good to go.

Jason

Thanks, looks easy enough to me.

I wonder if they put the coil connector on the left and the HP on the right because the cable goes into the coil on the left side of the coil.. I wonder if putting both connections on the same side has some technical reason behind it... I am just guessing. I noticed right away from the pictures that the cable connector is on the left side of the coil, contrary to most coils where the cable connects on the right side. Could this have something to do with the connections on the box?

I have been thinking about the HP connector and if it can be done, I think a small waterproof box on a 3" cable to connect to the HP connector on the pod would be nice. The box would have two or three connections with a metal screw on cap on the connections to keep it waterproof. Two 1/4" inputs and one of the Garretts connectors. The box could have a loop, clip, or velcro to attach it to your belt or strap or shaft. Then you'd never have to fiddle with the connection on the pod, and you could use the Garrett headphones, your choice of phones, or two sets of phones for training or sharing with someone. I mean if they are going to offer an adapter why not go all the way and make it so you never have to remove it and so that it will accomodate all headphones. Maybe in the future Garrett could hardwire a 3" cable to the pod for headphone connections, I think it is a good idea for this AT technology and would be good on the LS too. They could easily add a volume control to the box, if it could still be waterproofed.

Just a thought though...

Steve, the interior of the AT Pro has been compartmentized into 3 waterproof compartments. With that in mind, is there room for the connector to have been left there, where it is on the GTI?
