Well, I guess somebody is gonna have a good xmas this year,

There are DVR video systems available now that would allow you to easily install a few small unobtrusive video cams with and without recorded audio. They can be programmed to start recording and then to call a telephone when the system detects any movement of pixels from one of the cams. I would think there might be some "apps" for you to even be able to receive video to a smart phone rather than just a text or pre-recorded audio message from the DVR system. That way, you can choose to call the police yourself.

Be aware that most police departments are not used to getting a call for service unless from one of the licensed commercial security monitoring company's. At another store I used to own, I had a motion detector system that used an automatic phone dialer to call up to three phone numbers in sequence. I had a short pre-recorded message that said something like "An intrusion has been detected at Family Hardware. Call the Lee County Sheriff at XXX-XXX-XX XX." The message was repeated twice. I had the phone number on there so I would not have to look it up at night from a dead sleep. That was before cell phones so the number might not be needed in a message today.

When I called the Sheriff, to report the alarm going off, they would ask what monitoring company I represented. I had to explain I had my own security system that only called me ... then they would dispatch an officer.

Perhaps Butch (CO), or another forum friend might offer some system suggestions.

You should move to Florida. We protect ourselves.

The Florida "Castle Doctrine" law basically does three things:

One: It establishes, in law, the presumption that a criminal who forcibly enters or intrudes into your home or occupied vehicle is there to cause death or great bodily harm, therefore a person may use any manner of force, including deadly force, against that person.

Two: It removes the "duty to retreat" if you are attacked in any place you have a right to be. You no longer have to turn your back on a criminal and try to run when attacked. Instead, you may stand your ground and fight back, meeting force with force, including deadly force, if you reasonably believe it is necessary to prevent death or great bodily harm to yourself or others. [This is an American right repeatedly recognized in Supreme Court gun cases.]

Three: It provides that persons using force authorized by law shall not be prosecuted for using such force.

It also prohibits criminals and their families from suing victims for injuring or killing the criminals who have attacked them.

In short, it gives rights back to law-abiding people and forces judges and prosecutors who are prone to coddling criminals to instead focus on protecting victims.
