My opinion, based on ample experience, is a coil doesn't need to be round to provide performance, HOWEVER, there are advantages to coil shape and size in different configurations that can make them more efficient performers. The standard 'Viper' coil has surprised me a bit in performance for the many different sites I like to hunt. The 6X11 DD size is, as Garrett mentioned when they explained it's design, a scrunched-up blend of the 5X8 'Ripper' and 8½X11 'Raider' which thy are bringing out. Both my Apex devices have worked fine with the 'Viper' coil .... in most applications. Being limited to just the one coil, I have taken advantage of how well the Apex performs to enjoy that detector & coil team.
However, I have also wished for a slightly smaller coil to handle a lot of the common modern trash around picnic bowery and sports field sidelines, and or that I believe the 5X8 DD 'Ripper' ought to provide what I need. In some open areas, such as large grassy sises or out in th plowed fields, if I want to maybe get just a bit better depth-of-detection, the 'Raider' might be just the pick as an 8½X11 DD.
Now, to coil type as well as coil size and shape, I have been using Concentric coils ever since they have been around, and Double-D's ever since Compass Electronics started making their Yukon series in '71, and were the first to bring a DD coil into the hobby detector world. Through the years I pick the best coil for the task-at-hand based upon how the detector and coil work. So do not work as well with a Concentric as they do a DD, and visa-versa. Also, I do favor a smaller-size, and usually a round-shaped, search coil for handling the extremely dense iron nail and other ferrous debris I confront in most of th ghost towns and many similar sites. I started working them in '69 but have concentrated on them since mid-'83 and I really would like a smaller coil for the Apex. I hope Garrett might make one with the 4½" 'snooper' coil, likely Concentric, or I'm also going to try the NEL 'Sharp' which is a 5" DD. It would be nice to have a little variety that would include one or two Concentric coils, and round would be a nice shape.

That smaller 5" x 8" coil would sure come in handy right now. It slices through dry powder snow like a knife through butter, allowing me to still detect in 8" of snow, in the woods.
We're getting our first light snow of the season right now, but it will turn to rain in a while. We seldom get much now here. Cold, yes, but not much snow like you do up your way. But I still have a lot of modest debris areas where the 5X8 'Ripper' coil should b helpful, and when i get into some of the weedier locations, dense sagebrush and such, or into the treed areas in some of the old gold mining era ghost towns, it will be a 5X8 DD and a smaller coil that will be called upon to get the job done. Even the skinny-but-lengthy 'Viper' coil gets too tangled up trying to fit in and around and under a lot of those more vegetated locations, so a more mid-sized 5X8 will be handier to have mounted. I look forward to working the'Ripper' coil in a few challenging areas near me soon, and combined with the performance of the Apex, I think the results will be satisfying.
