Wedding ring found and returned with the ctx

I went to Florida for a few months for some decent vacation. Another beautiful day as I arrived at the beach about noon. A lifeguard I know came over to say hello. He says someone lost the wedding ring a few minutes ago at station 12. I said I would go look. When I got there, there was another guy with an excal already hunting in the water. I talked to the other lifeguard and she pointed out the person that lost their ring. He was from Argentina on vacation with wife and child.

He told me that he was adjusting the ring and it slipped off and he saw it hit the water....and then gone. I asked him what it looked like and his wife's was a match.Oh by the way, he said, I lost it yesterday!!! I said lots of people hunt this beach so maybe its here and maybe not. I will give it a shot. It occurred to me that last night were he dropped it in the water, was now wet beach and not where the other detectorist was hunting in the ocean.

I started hunting.....about 10 minutes later.....I got a good signal....sure enough.....gold wedding band and it was like his wife's ring. I called to him and said to him...."can you tell me what it looked like again"? He asked his wife to come over and show me hers. I said that's funny because I have one just like it on my little finger! For a minute...he thought I had one just like his and then it dawned on him. He was very happy! He thought it was gone for sure.

They gave me something to drink and we chatted for a bit. He thought I was with the city as I knew some lifeguards and this was a public service. I said no....just trying to help you out. He wanted to pay me. I said no thank you....glad to help especially on your vacation.. Nice people!

About 4 hours later,,,,he ran about 1.5 blocks to catch up with me and handed me some money....I refused but he said it was the least he could do as his wife was going to kill him for loosing his wedding ring....I relented ......and he said...."if you come to Argentina,,,,I owe you a drink". I might take him up on his offer and it was a nice day for all of us!

The last day of my hunt my ctx 3030 leaked.....I have no idea why. Its at Minelab now and we will see what happens with that. On a good note.....I was able to find more things before it died....on the next post coming soon.

That's a great story, James. Are you back in Oregon now? I'm going to be over there on this Friday until the 15th. PM me if you think we might be able to get together for a hunt.

You're our International relations man James.

Being new with your CTX, there are special precautions that must be taken when charging the battery that you may or may not be aware of, they are posted elsewhere, someone may point that out. I think Minelab has a special bulletin on that too. In short, the gasket must be free of all dirt and sand and properly seated to keep the water out.

Good story with a great ending. Thanks for posting. Sorry to hear about your machine. Minelab doctors are good. HH :minelab:

Your a good man. You will be rewarded 10 fold in the future.

Thanks Larry,

I actually have done so much talking to people on the beach etc about this hobby....even with headphones they just gotta talk to me. I'm waiting to Heide Klum to hit me up about depth and sensitivity:)

I hear ya about the seal situation...I always check...take out gasket...clean and put back. I am very aware of how the "elements" go after any electronics with a vengeance. Condensation alone is enough to take some equipment down. I personally think that the seals are not tight enough with enough pressure on the ctx to be extremely reliable. I thought when I first looked at the ctx and said Minelab must know what they are doing. I think this seal situation could have been done better. I believe that they will have lots of problems in dealing with this issue. I exposed mine to a few inches of water....that's it.

Good Job James, Water looks warm and clear, Can you go out a Ways before it gets Deep??? Mick,

Thanks! Yes, you can in most areas. Sure beats the 21 degrees it is here now

Great job, that was a good thing you did!

I just bought a CTX-3030 two weeks ago and it leaked the second time in the water, when I called KellyCo they stated that this was the fist time they heard of a leak! Imagine that! I then called minelab and they where all over it, fortunately I have a few excall's as my primary water machines.

Best of luck!!

My machine has been @ minelab since nov 29th....we will see what happens. I have lots of experience on how water/moisture/condensation can play havoc on electronic equipment etc. I personally dont think the seal is thick enough nor enough clamping pressure to do the proper job and keeping water OUT. I can see it being water resistant for sure but totally reliably water proof....I think not. My other water machine from Whites has a great seal with great clamping pressure. I think Minelab did very well on creating the ctx but feel short on the battery sealing situation. We will see if Minelab rises to the occasion.

I talked with a Tec on the phone N he talked Like its are Bad 4R letting the D-Ring get Dirty??? Thy haven't stepped up yet as far as making a thicker D-Ring
Or sending us updates / upgrads / softweare improvement whatever??? But I Hope im Wrong, Mic

Absolutely! Letting any kind of seal get dirty and not cleaning it, is just not good common sense. When you have a seal that is very clean and placed properly and still leaks....that is just not good..

I hope things improve in the coming year!

Yes James i Hope 4R all are sake good Luck too you , Mick

Aloha James, I live Hawaii and had almost the same thing happened, A friend found me and said someone lost a ring in the water earlier that day and could I try finding it. I went and got my gear and ran into the guy who lost the ring. People had been looking for it all day and when I got to the area it took me 10 mins to find it, it had been stomped down 8 inches in the sand and when I found it the whole beach went crazy. He told me it cost $2200 and his wife was pissed even thou it slipped off while holding his kids hand. There is nothing like helping someone and to see their face when you pull it out of the water. James great job and keep up the good work. Aloha S.

BigDog good Job to you also, I was asked by a friend to help find his friends Diamond Ring after being lost 4R 7 years at a public park,
I was concentrating so hard my CTX was Like using a Dowsing Rod I felt wen I was going in the wrong Detection and in 45 Min
I found it 4" in the ground!!!!!!! , Its on my Blog if you go to Ring Finders, Mickey Lewis, Los Banos Thanks all keep up the Good work,
Mickfin

Thanks all and good for you! I have returned things before but this was really nice to accomplish for the family(friends) from Argentina.

On another note, as you know my ctx 3030 has been @ Minelab for roughly a couple of weeks now. I just got a phone call/email from Minelab today.

I was not sure what I was going to hear about "servicing" my detector. Heres the story....Minelab said there were just too many issues with servicing sooooooo
they are just going to replace the detector and its on the way to be here next week. I was thinking that would be the proper thing to do but did not know what to expect. I am very happy about that.

In sum, we have all heard things about service etc....I have to say....this is the second time... Minelab has given me extremely good service.....and just did what needed to be done. I have to say....Minelab did very good things again!:clapping:

That's as good as it gets... any discussion about the battery seal/water intrusion and are they planning any upgrades to the seal?
