Waterproofing Sovereign XS-2a Pro/Related - How To

Burbank Bob

New member
Sovereign XS-2a Pro installed in Plano 1460 box. Easy project, low cost. - You can use any model of Sov in this case.

I use a military surplus rubber impregnated canvas bag. Has a waist strap and does not move around.

Keeps the waves out and the box dry. I can go under the water, but that's not the idea behind the build. Just to keep it dry from occasional waves.

Bob thats cool

Geeeezzzzz Bob.... You're really making me regret selling that Sovereign that to you! :)

Great Job... the detector looks great and from what I've read it appears to be doing what you set out to make it do.

Bob can you tell us more about those cable clams, where to get them, how they work, what do you have to do to change coils. I saw some setups like this only with I think it was otter boxes or similiar, looks alot like what you have there.
Very cool setup:thumbup:

I considered a chest mount, but think it would get in the way when I dig. May get a back pack for it.

I got the clams from http://stores.ebay.com/marinesupplydirect - they had the best price.

What you do is:

1. Drill a hole in the surface you want to run the cable through at whatever smallest diameter will work for the connector to pass through.

2. Push the tapered rubber plug out of the clam and drill a hole in it (start with a small bit and work up, keeping it wet) just big enough for the cable.

3. Take a razor knife and cut through the side of the tapered rubber plug to the center hole you just drilled.

4. Pass the cable through the box, into the slit to the center of the rubber plug and tighten down the screws snugly and VOILA! Done... watertight!

5. Takes less than 5 minutes to pull the cable and remove the Sov from the box to mount normally on the shaft.

6. DON'T over tighten the screws or your box could crack.

When I start finding bling in the water at the beach, I will be a happy guy. Going to give it a dunking over the weekend at Santa Monica.

Real nice work Bob, very clean..Like the detail pictures..........Also on the cable clam you can run more then one wire thur them if need by purchasing the larger Clam size...another option to the CC' are the cable grips if you want to WP a detector but you would have to cut the wire..these are like 3 dollars each.. compared to the 20 for the CC...........Digikey.com has them....got my CC's at West Marina, 20sm, 22med, 23 for the large,

On the mode itself I'm not sure if I like mine, it's great not having to worry about the detector getting wet but having to readjust the settings is a real pain. In the deep a remote PP button sure helps but just hunting the wetsand and low surf one can do fine.I do like the weight transfer from the shaft to a Backpack along with the 8 inch coil one can swing all day.....Bob, let us know how you makeout with the new machine...............

Good points about the multiple holes in the clams, and yes they are pricey.

I'll find out how big a pain it is this weekend to set it. This one has no PP or Manual Ground Balance, just a "Beach" setting on the sens and the threshold level. I'll try to get em leveled out in shallow surf then button it up.

Bob you have done a fine job modifying the case for this project!

I am putting one together too and excited about using my GT without having to worry about splashing!

The Plano case is very well constructed and garranteed to withstand 1-meteer for 20 minutes of dunking. (splashing the GT should be no problem!)

I would like to have some ensight from yourself and others about this vent hole in the case!!

There is a rubber seal on the main locking catch to block the hole, but ------------------------------------? (Sorry for the fuzzy pic!)

Not once in all the posts etc I have read is it mentioned and I am inclined to seal it to trap a little positive pressure in the case!

Any thoughts about this?

Regards,

CJ

Mine does not have that hole, but I would seal it with a good grade of marine epoxy.

If any of you have a suggestion (with a picture) for a better way to carry this beast, I'd appreciate seeing them.

I'd like to find something compact that can take the ocean without falling apart after a while from rot if such a thing exists.

Thanks!

Bob... here's a couple of images of the mount on my Goldquest Aquasearch that may provide you with an idea how to work yours?

NEBeachComber, If you or anyone else knows where to find the belt bracket as shown in your Aquasearch Pic, please post the info. It might have been custom though.
Thanks.

That looks like a good way to put it on a belt. I've got one that size just need to find the metal piece to put on the box to thread it through.

I'd love to get a waterproof sensitivity control and all metal switch on the outside but I hate the thought of hacking up the control box to do it.

Taking it for it's maiden dunking at Santa Monica today.

As an after thought... have you considered hip mounting it in a Sovereign hip mount pouch? You probably couldn't use the pouch for the Sovereign XS Pro, but the black pouch for the Sovereign GT is a little bigger and might work? (I think the GT pouch might even be somewhat adjustable width wise?) Then you would have to do anymore drilling and sealing.
