Waterproofing A Sovereign

Forgot to mention that we hunted the entire swim area right down to where the water meets the dry sand on the beach, so we covered it all. Was a nice feeling to know that if anybody shows up there this weekend to hunt he'll pretty much be devoid of target signals.

I hunted the entire time in Auto sensitivity and the depth was good. I only did this because it's only my second time water hunting with the GT and I didn't want to hassle over anything. Just a nice easy hunt where I could concentrate more on getting my hear/PP/scoop routine down since it's been years since I've water hunted. I didn't want to make any dumb mistakes, like bending over and forgetting that I'm in the water and have now dunked my control box. :biggrin:t Easy mistake to make when you are still have asleep and the coffee hasn't kicked in yet. Also, since I'm still getting the scooping routine down I didn't want to be digging to China and not know if it's real deep or I'm just off target. Next time out I plane to calibrate manual, or at least stick with 2PM which should be deeper than Auto.

We continued our hunting hitting a few other beaches on one of the great lakes Saturday, Sunday, and this morning. Saturday I managed a stainless steel ring with a pattern cut the entire way through it. My first ring with this water rig. Wished it was white gold but it's still a good looking ring. Yesterday was my day as I spotted a ring in the dry sand by eye when we were taking a break. Picked it up and the thing was huge with a bunch of small diamonds. Our shock quickly faded when we saw that it was costume jewelry, but it also is a good looking ring. The sun glinted out it just right to cause me to notice it, and the odd thing was that when I moved towards it it went back to looking like a screw cap with some sand on it. I went to back off a step or two and once again it looked like a ring, so this time I walked all the way over and picked it up. Later a guy showed up and said his son lost his class ring the day before in the very stretch of water I was gridding. He said it was planinum (know I probably spelled that wrong) and looked much like a stainless steel or titanium ring in color. He left us his phone number if we found it and said he'd give us $20 for the effort. Since I was gridding that spot anyway I figured it was worth my time and about an hour later up came the ring in my sand scoop. I called the guy on a cell phone and he told me what writing it had on it and the year, confirming for me that I had found the ring. Twenty minutes later he had his son's ring back and I had a twenty dollar bill in my pocket. Not bad.

Three rings for me with my first few water hunts after not doing any for well over ten years. That was decent but my buddy is the one who really shined over the weekend. From memory he got two gold rings, three or four silvers, and two or three junk rings. I'm using a smaller scoop and am still fine tuning my methods with that in the water so it's taking me a bit longer than him to recover my targets. I've got a nice pile of clad and a few hot wheels to show for my efforts besides the three rings so I feel I'm off to a good start. The water rig has performed flawlessly for me, though I'm still running in Auto for now until I get my water hunting skills down better.

Enjoyed reading about your outings and finds. I'm not one able to relate a story as well as you do but hope that you keep posting how your doing with your detector. Thanks.

I am going to be the first guy on this forum to say that Critterhunter ends up with an Excalibur. Very cool move returning the ring.

Thanks.

Nope, my buddy keeps trying to talk me into buying one. I realize it's the deepest/best water unit on the market but I very much hate the heavy unformfortable hardware setup of an Excalibur. I'd have to build my own straight shaft for it, reverse the control box and mount it high on the back of the shaft to lower drag and allow for easy PP reach (which I'm not using to PP targets in the water on my GT anyway, discriminate works fine to scoop'em up), and use a nice comfortable custom hand grip. To me if I can build something just as good at a much lower price then that's the way I go, and since the Excaliber is a Sovereign I see no reason to pay that kind of money when I can build one for about 1/5th the price or less. Besides, I enjoy projects like this building my own devices to save money, so it's win/win for me to just use a Sovereign. Like I said, even if I had to build one from scratch I figure an older Sovereign control box, coil, custom shaft and waterproof box could be done south of $250 or less. If I had a cool grand laying around I'd waste it on an Etrac to add to my line up.

I am French!
Sorry for my English.

I own a GT Sovereing I want to seal.
The problem is that in France we do not find the parts.

So one of you can point me to the dimension of transparent waterproof Pelican box and the size of the glands for passing the son of the helmet and disc.
I am looking for companies that can deliver parts to me in France for example with EBAY.

Thank you for helping me in my search

This is probably the nicest custom Sovereign waterproofing job I've seen to date. Done by Old California...

Check out the pictures below. Really slick. In fact, I think the only custom box waterproofing job on any land detector that ranks right up there with it was I think a Troy Shadow that was housed in a clear box too and also customized with external controls like this Sovereign was...

Look at the picture below first BEFORE you go to the link...

I just put together a huge list of waterproofing Sovereign threads, from simply "throw it in a box" jobs, to "throw it in a waterproof backpack type deals, to custom ones where the the control box is ditched and the electronics custom installed into a new waterproof box with external controls. I also included some links to custom jobs on other detectors that give some great ideas on how one might go about such a project as well as part sources for things like waterproof POT controls and such. You can make a project like this as cheap and simple as you want to or as complicated and high tech as you want, but still in the end probably save a bunch of money over buying a waterproof detector. You can also make this product so that your control box can be removed and placed back on your land rig in a matter of minutes. You can also go the elaborate way and use waterproof connectors for your headphones and coils connected to the box, or the cheap way and just use some heavy rubber cement such as Shoe Goo. The ideas and methods are endless...
