Water detecting newbie

I water detected the 4Th of July weekend my 3rd-5Th time out i did not find much as i am learning. I found a couple dollars in clad and 2 Buffalo nickles a 1927 my first with a date and a no date
one after another also a fishing lure.
Water detecting is definitely not easy i am using a DetectorPro Wader and a homemade scoop, it works great in wet/dry sand but stinks underwater as the scoop diameter is to small
and the handle is to short. The handle was made from a Razor scooter steering column and was to slide out another 12-15 inches ,I think, but my buddy welded it in the down position and now it won't slide.

I left 3-4 good, strong sounding targets, I just could not recover. Some were in rocky areas and could not dig a others were in the sand and just could not find. I spent 10 mins. on one to get a roofing nail.
I would pinpoint as best I could and mark the spot with my foot then dig.

Well, I'm not giving up. I know there is gold in them waters some of the swimmer had some big gold chains and pendants. What are they thinking?
'
I am going to start on a new scoop i have a stainless steel box 61/4"Wide x 71/2"Long x 6"Deep. How will a square one work? i know most prefer Round or diamond shaped
Any tips on the square scoop or water detecting in general would be appreciated.

Thanks, Epi

Just scroll back through the pages of this part of the forum and read about scoops and hints other give. What you seek is here. I doubt many will want to repeat it again. My take is it isn't they are not interested or helpful or will be, but just don't want to perseverate on the same subjects.

If one person speaks about what you are really interested in and it's still not clear to you, use the PM and ask them there.

Square is not good. Too much surface area hitting the substrate at the same time. Will increase friction and reduce speed and depth. I've read that with the sand wanting to rush back in and fill the hole, it's kind of like a razor clam. You dig and it goes deeper and so on.

If you are really going to be a water hunter get yourself a scoop. Search "scoop" and then read until you are tired. jim
