Was just setting here thinking what happened to all the ATpro haters

First I have to say I think Uncle Willy deserves to get an early machine. I have enjoyed reading his field tests for years now and they influenced me to buy one detector or another.

However, looking at things from Garrett's viewpoint, some of the threads he started, namely the best detector ever made one, generated quite a few sceptical comments and caused a lot of controversy. Maybe it is true that all publicity is good but I could see them getting a little worried about some of the hype. Maybe they are sending a message to cool down the hype a bit by making him wait a little bit for his machine. But this is akin to reading tea leaves - just a guess.

Just my 2 cents worth, like I said I have always liked his field reports, he is a good writer and he deserves a test machine just for that. Just wish they would send a few towards the New England distributor so I can get mine

There is nothing like feedback from experience. I think Bill is the kind of guy to have involved from the start on a new design. He pulls no punches and would give the engineers an earful if any machine wasn't up to snuff. This would give the engineers plenty of time to get it right.

We're all big boys and girls here .....If you have been detecting for any amount of time , you know that there are no miracles here ..... You put your time in , and you get your targets no matter what machine you use ...... To get excited about a new machine is only natural .... If Garrett did not want people to hear about this machine , they would have kept everything quiet ..... They used their "special " wording too and very much beat around the bush about this machine .....Bill just took the ball and ran with it ..... Nothing was etched in stone , and there were no cold hard facts, or even any clips on hunts , or anything else about this machine in the beginning ..... REAL threads are just now starting to surface ..... A lot of people bought into this machine from Garretts reputation , and from the hype that went along with it ..... If nobody talked about the AT Pro , it would be an orphan wating to get noticed ..... Now that its all said and done, and the AT PRo is a reality , it is turning out to be a really nice machine ..... I'm not running out and selling my other machines anytime soon, but I am reading more and more about the AT PRo ..... So far from what I am reading , it's a nice peice of kit , and a good deal for $600 ....... Jim

and I agree that UW's (who I'm not slamming in the least bit) original post is what lead to a lot of the resulting controversies between those that are the exclusively Garrett faithful and the multi brand users. Don't get me wrong, faith and allegiance is a great thing, but perhaps when it comes to material things maybe we can sometimes overdo it? Was there some drive by stuff going on? I imagine there was but did it hurt the AT? No....it just hurt some feelings. IMO, most of the ensuing problems were around those that preferred to remain cautious in varying degrees until the rubber meets the road and actual broad based usage data is available. How dare they think that way. I also found the usage of the term "haters" interesting. If someone wasn't completely and all in and was cautious about unsubstantiated information, then they were "haters"? Uhh, ok. Ironically, by my personal definition, I only saw ONE example of hate on this forum through all of this and that came from " one of its own" that resorted to name calling and personal attacks which were promptly deleted. I suspect most folks missed that. The bottom line is the AT Pro, just like any other metal detector, will be exactly whatever it collectively turns out to be to its individual owners whether they be Green clad cheerleaders, multi-brand enthusiasts, newbs, old farts, coin shooters, water hunters, relic hunters, etc, etc and I think that is what is important and pertinent. The dirty little secret is, that was bound to ultimately happen no matter what anyone was or is trying to pull. Unfortunately, given the local weather, I'll probably now have to find out for myself what the AT brings next spring and I'm not happy about that.

Jim, yes Uncle Willy did generate some excitement with what he said, however it all went downhill from there in some folks eyes. I guess those statements about making the other detectors obsolete were pretty 'over the top', but he said them HERE in the Garrett forum, to the Garrett users. He didn't take them and post them in the Minelab forum or Tesoro, etc. Seems that the ones that took most offense were Minelab users-strange. Now I sure have enjoyed my Minelabs but I'm not so brand loyal that I couldn't part with one in order to get my AT! We just now are getting the AT's in our hands. It has obsoleted at least one detector for me based on the water aspect. I sure hope it does 'well' at all things I try, but I expect it fall short somewhere-that's just the nature of 'things' and we all should expect this.

Anyway, I guess it would've been better if I hadn't posted in this thread-my intent is not to rehash old arguments that my inputs probably made worse! My only intent ever is to try to get folks to be objective, and not post opinions based on a lack of specific knowledge. The AT is still trickling out into folks hands...everybody be patient and all our answers will come!

No arguements here .......I'm happy to see th AT Pro finally make it out into the open, and I'm glad for everyone who bought one and is happy with their purchase ...... I don't care WHAT company makes a detector ....If it suit's my purpose , and it works for me , I'm a happy camper .... Not many people are making comparisons anymore ....This is good ....No more speculation .....REAL STUFF now !!..... I want to see the AT Pro do well as much as the next guy !!..... So far , so good !!....and I hope it continues to do better ...... The criteria that my detector has to meet is not an easy one to meet .....I'm not brand loyal ( you wouldn't think so because I own 3 Minelab detectors ) ....I'm GREAT DETECTOR loyal !!....I don't care who's name is on it ..... You want to charge more ? ...OK by me ....You want to charge less ? ....Even better !!.....I want my machine to do what I want it to do .... If it doesn't do what I need it to do , I don't care how cheap it is , I don't want it !!....... I already know that I can have any detector I buy , paid for in a year or less, so it doesn't matter to me how much I pay for a detector if it's a good one ....My Sovereign will be sold shortly because my E Trac is better on dry land ....My Excal speaks for itself in the water ......That leaves me with extra money to buy something that I can throw in the car and take with me anywhere I go ..... If I try out an AT Pro and it works well in my area , it may just be the machine that goes in my truck and might just end up my favorite detector ..... I posted a thread to see if anyone in the are has one so I can try it out to see how it is in MY area .....Plenty of trash to cut thru ...... Lot's of iron to play with ...... It also needs ot ID well .....We'll see .....Jim

I have had Garrett products from the start and they all performed just as stated. But I soon learned that no matter how good your detector is you have to put that coil in the right place to make it work for you. I suspect that the ATPro will be just as advertised, and I have had an ACE 250 for quite some time and I can assure you it is not the same as the ATPro. The only thing missing from the $1200 detectors on the market is the multifrequency capability. But I have tried one and wasn't too impressed by it anyway. Can't wait to get my Pro out and make it work for me. Onus

looks like a lot of them are on the connector kick now for a reason for not getting one.i for one will not let it stop me for getting the at pro i will silicone grease the outside of the male connector and put it on,the only thing keeping me from getting one right now is weather and money but i will have one by spring.

Well, I just sold my GTI 2500 and purchased the AT Pro. I am glad that I did. The AT Pro is a deeper machine than the GTI 2500 in my opinion. I have used the 2500 for several years and it was a great machine. I just believe the AT Pro has more to offer. If the 2500 was upgraded to the AT Pro WOW what a machine that would be no other machine could touch it.

Well I was never a hater, and I'm still not - but what I do hate is I think I ground down a couple layers of enamel from my teeth waiting for the first post results from the early buyers.

The diffrence with past field tests (with other models) is that the AT-Pro was given a A+ grade Before it ever hit the fields. Those who questioned that A+ grade (based on nothing but the manufacturers own commercial Ads) were looked as haters by brand loyalists. Now that the At-Pro is actually out it is obvious that it is a good detector, but not without problems. 1st edition detectors always have bugs to work out. Some other brand models have went through 3 or more versions just to be a competitor. It is now up to Garrett to listen to the actual users of the AT-Pro to make it better. Is it the best detector ever made....no, but it can come closer to the mark.

My dad always told me never believe all you hear and only half of what your see and will wait till I hold one in my hands to judge..Will it be the best thing since sliced bread or the best detector ever made...I fear not but it will be a competent unit (sensibly priced) to give the big boys costing twice as much a run for the money.(no pun intended)...

Dankowski finally has one and seems really impressed. He seems like a fair minded guy to me and I believe his word was "shocked". He seems to think there is some sort of problem with shielding paint in the coil that makes it false when swept too close to the ground or when rocked in the air but also said that if this is fixed that he thinks it should run with the most expensive machines... but even as it is he was 'shocked" at the performance.

I will certianly be getting an AT in the spring... money is too tight right now with Christmas. Our cash flow is always down in December too. Both my wife and I are self employed, running seperate small businesses... but spring is right around the corner!

It looks like Garrett has a winner.

We have had near record rain and storms since my new AT Pro arrived about 2 weeks ago, so my experience is still very limited. I don't think anybody who has one is gonna hate it. You may just like what other detector you have better, which is fine.
Last Summer, I planted a detector garden; pretty much needed a jack hammer for our Sierra cement. Our red clay is highly mineralized, full of hot rocks, many of which are highly magnetic, so a manual ground balance feature is almost essential. The recent rains have "aged" the garden, and totally changed how the detectors see targets. The new AT Pro has correctly identified about 90% of my 30+ targets, although the depth readings have been off, mostly too deep.
My recently repaired, and upgraded, 20 year old Whites QXT is still pretty accurate, but now that the ground is wet, it has to be in relic mode, and it still will not find some of the deeper targets.
Of course, I could go hunt in the rain with the new waterproof AT Pro, but I won't. At 71, I take a lesson from the cats, and curl up in front of the fireplace.

I was going to chat about the depth meter on the AT.

2' = 0 to 2" double ding means on top and depends on target in std mode. Targets tend to be re-evaluated in depth while pinpointing-check the scale.
4"=2 to 4"
6"=4 to 6"
8"=6 to 8"
10"= 8 to 10+ "

I will tell you be prepared to dig 10 inches.
I hope this helps with the whole depth thing. My pinpointing has been pretty darn good. I am half blind (LOL). People could test their pinpointing with a golf "t". I suggest that folks have bad pinpointing for lack of"x ing" and vision. LOL. I have found also in the past that the Garrett machines do well in moist soil am not sure in the puddles.

I second that.

And from what I have been reading most are happy with what they have purchased. I welcome competition between the different manufacturers. This is not the end, but only the beginning of AT detectors. As long as a person is happy with what they are swinging good for them. I beach hunt mostly myself. I am more than happy with my Excalibur and PI unit in the water. For sand I will keep the Sovereign. I know them and like them.

From what I have been reading it sounds like Garrett could or maybe I say should of just stuck with the Pro mode. Maybe this would have lowered the price even more.

I don't think there were any AT Pro haters but rather
a few scepkics perhaps before the release.

The AT Pro is a nice machine no doubt. I just wished
that they would of made the control box a little bit
larger so that the headphone fitting area was not so
cramped. That's a real bugger!

Good luck to everyone with the AT Pro. It will be
interesteing to see what updates Garrett may make
to any future detectors.

Happy Holidays to all!

Larry
