Warning CTX 3030 battery seal

Today I was going to charge the CTX 3030 battery and use the alkaline battery pack on the detector. This is the first time the battery has been taken off the detector since I put it together. I'm glad I didn't switch batteries in the field because the red o-ring waterproofing seal fell off. If I hadn't been paying attention and didn't see it fall, I would have been in for a bad surprise when I went in the water. So far love the detector, but didn't want anyone to get a nasty surprise.

I can see where that might be a problem, it might not hurt to have an extra one or two in your "spare parts" case.

JR, I had the same thing happen to the seal in mine and if you don't spot it right away,it would be very hard
to find again.I would hate to not see it come out and submerge it and find out that it was full of water.I am
going to keep an eye on it now that I know that it will fall out easily. Gary

I noticed the same thing when swapping battery packs, I coated the gasket with some light grease, keeps it in the slot, and makes me feel more secure that it'll be water tight.

I assume by grease you meant silicone? Any petrol based product will destroy the seal or "o" ring. Please only use silicone grease on the seals. You can get it in the plumbing aisle of your Home Depot, or Lowes Store.

FYI if it does come out fortunately it would only be a battery problem not the whole unit as I understand. same happened to me so just keep an eye on it.

This is great info as I have had to pull the battery in the field (sand) to reboot the machine after it froze and wouldn't do anything. A drop in the sand could have ended the day.

For those who would like to see the O-ring that is the subject of this post, here is a photo. The red O-ring fits in the slot and it is a loose fit, making it easy to flip out.

Note: Silicon grease can damage resistors. So if used on the O-ring do not over apply. Also any type of grease can cause grit or soil to stick to the O-ring. It will need to be cleaned each time and re-applied.
I know this becasue I had carbon brushes in a DC motor that was failing and found out that silicon grease was being used on the motor bearings. While doing reasearch I also read about the resistors.
