Video - Excellent footage in iron, Be careful using QuickMask

This is the best example I have filmed yet of Quick mask dropping a coin to the lower right corner due to co-located iron. Basically, the iron is overpowering the coin signal imo and you can observe this by the jumpiness (which I mention as it happens). I am using the 6X8 SEF coil.

It is also my best example of recovery fast assisting the VID/Crosshairs in pulling a coin out of heavier iron. I had tested switching from recovery fast off to on in prior hunts and there was almost always no difference, but now as I hunt deeper into the iron (after removing the easier signals), I can CLEARLY see that recovery fast on has its benefits (even though I found the coin with it off).

We take a look at TTF on the target as well. Again, benefit is shown here.

The video is completed by checking the ground after the target was removed and showing the higher iron level in TTF.

I'd love to hear your stories, experiences, opinions and such,
Let's learn,
Albert

ps - I shot the video in better quality and think the upload is better than those in the past. So, click on "youtube" in the lower right corner and then once there, watch it in 480 so you can see the screen better.

WELL DONE

Your Video's have made me think outside the Box
Using Quick Mask and TTF when I have doubts

Thanks Albert

Nice video Albert, I use recovery fast on when in TTF sweeping slowly across suspected target. In conductive I tend to do recovery fast off depending on the site of course.

WTG Albert Neat video

Thanks guys/gals. Bell, after getting better hits in heavy iron I know do just what you say. My conductive mode is with recovery fast off but in TTF I have it on.

Another excellent video Albert. I am still a new user with the E-trac, so I won't be able to contribute much to this discussion, but I am beginning to understand it's unique capabilities. I was out detecting today and noticed similar results to what you posted. I was at a location with a fair bit of iron, but was getting consistent targets within the iron. When opening my E-trac wide open in quick mask, the crosshairs would be "jumpy" and inconsistent. However, I was getting strong hits in several directions...after opening the plug, I found a large square iron nail down about 5 inches...with an Indian Head penny (1907) below the nail an additional 3-4 inches.

Keep the videos coming...I like them!

Thanks niterider - I think you are actually seeing me get a better handle on the machine. I'm not at over a 100 hours and using that small coil just opened that spot all over again.

firewxman - Thanks for the comments, I'm fairly new as well, just a few months but the machine grows on you in how it presents data quite unlike other non Minelab units. If you have a lot of hits in one direction, as this spot I hunt does, the smaller coils really really open it up. But it sounds like you are doing GREAT with that coin under a nail. That is near impossible to do, but you did it. I would like to hear more details to your finds in the future if you keep that up!

Eva - I forgot to say earlier, yes, use quick mask when you have doubts BUT notice if there is iron around the hole (TTF makes it easy) and then if there is don't depend as much on quick mask (opened up) as the iron can pull the coin signals down and away. Good luck, get more gold ;-)

great video.!!!!! that right there shows how the etrac can pick out good targets amongst the trash. I usually just stay in conductive, i dont really use quick mask or ttf. one thing i do is try to make "micro" sweeps (1"-2") and see if i can get right on the "good" target. if theres something good down there, the etrac will let you know it. that is actually a good video of what can really overwhelm someone new to the etrac. I'm sure someone unfamiliar with it would wonder what the heck all those sounds and jumping numbers mean. its just trying its best to tell you what its "seeing". if theres a lot of metal in the ground, its going to get chatty! thats why they say "go slow". but not too slow.

moonshine - I prefer conductive as well. I hunted today and came across 2 targets in conductive that I WOULD NOT HAVE DUG in TTF. So, this works in both ways. I didn't understand it as they weren't deep (6"-7") with 6X8 SEF and there wasn't much iron near the hole. But TTF mostly said "iron" with fast on or off. The E-Trac is like an athlete who gets the title "deceptively quick", meaning the speed (or in this case "recovery) measurements are surpassed with intelligence, fakes, etc. (in the case of the E-Trac that "trash density high" setting and even when off it still gets great separation with a not so fast recovery speed.)

walker - I'm not sure of your comment as I'm not hunting in a park and have said as much in other videos. It is more like a pasture or meadow. I am not hunting in a park and would not bring a shovel into a park. When I hunt parks I bring my Lesche and even then I try to keep it covered with my digging towel as it is a big knife.
Funny though that you mentioned this today as my neighbor unexpectedly met up with me today and we hunted a bit together. As I was leaving I for the 4th or 5th time mentioned he needs to cover his holes correctly. He was amazed that I am so neat and use the towel and such. Well, I got into it with him. He pissed me off saying "Well the mole hills are messy" And I was like, we are not stupid animals. And kids in winter can trip over your holes and get hurt. And he said, "well they shouldn't be here as this is private", which it isn't really and made no sense. Anyway, that won't be the last time I stick up for doing the right thing.

Thanks for the comments guys,
Albert

sometimes i get fooled by iron, and sometimes i dont. yesterday i had a feeling that something good was mixed in with iron, so i just went right at the iron first to clear it out, i dug up two large peices of iron. i look down and noticed a wheat penny flipped out of the dirt. but on the other hand, sometimes after i dug the iron, there would be no other good signal left, so i guess it was just the iron, fooling me. thats really frustrating!

Moonshine - Sure, I think all of us get lucky by "finding" coins next to iron that is too big to matter. But there are other situations where it is clear that our Nuggins did a little detective work and put together the pieces of the puzzle.

Like I said before, I have around 100 hours on the E-Trac and right around at 100 hours I started to understand those much harder to understand signals. I admit that I still dig iron, but that is ok, by digging you will learn to put a picture with what the machine is telling you. I could dig just the "give me" signals and not dig any iron, but for me, it really isn't about the destination, it's the journey. I basically haven't dug anything below the halfway point on the E-Tracs depth meter since the 2nd week I got it (except for potential silver targets) - 3 months now! It is just fun for me to find deeper targets, even if they are zinc.

We all have moments of frustration but that is a part of the journey of discovery and learning (and I'm not trying to be philosophical here). Like anything out there - playing guitar, doing art, etc. the results come mainly with time spent and focus. If you spend the time but don't focus that greatly reduces effectiveness. In a big way, I am learning in part by just by re-watching videos. Good luck and keep with it.
