Very dissappointed with the Cortes...

with my Cortes. I can say right now that many foil signals, even shallow foil, disappear when lifting the coil a little higher, and some older corroded tabs too.
 
In the OLD DAYS we almost had to "scrub the coil" to get best performance and less falsing from coil-to-ground variations when using a conventional TR (IB) detector.

With the development of the ground cancelling circuitry we no longer had those issues and 'scrubbing" a coil was no longer necessary in the ground canceled mode, and soo it was learned by savvy detectorists that performance was best if the coil was worked close to, but not touching, the ground. In time, this information went back up the line to manufacturers and then electronic engineers who explained it to the management and soon operator
