???Vaquero???

This thread demonstrates one point I've made a few times on the forums. I realize as well as anyone that air tests are not a substitute for real in ground performance. However, in cases like this, an air test is useful to compare to what the same combination was doing weeks or months earlier it the same test had been done and recorded. Easy then to see if the detectors performance had indeed changed over time.

Randy, I will agree with you on the brown 8" coil for that series, at least when I used the one I had on my Lobo Super-Traq. That was back in '99-'00 as I was using the Super-Traq quite a bit and evaluating coils, and there was no doubt about how well that model hunted with that brown coil. It was great!

But sometimes a certain coil that you like just doesn't seem to help, if a detector is:

a.. In need or repair ... or ....

b.. Just a crappy detector to begin with.

It is sad to say that there have been more models from Tesoro that have had design glitches that I would have liked to have seen, especially since I was a Tesoro Dealer for so long. Heck, I'd like to sell Tesoro models again, but I will only stock and sell those that I feel are pretty much problem-free. Even a borrowed Vaquero didn't match up with the performance of a borrowed Outlaw that I was evaluating, and tat wasn't one of the four Vaquero's I have personally owned, then parted with.

Still, I agree with you about how well the brown 8"concentric coil works on those models. I like it better than the 8x9 by far. In this case he might want to have the Vaquero checked out to be certain it is problem-free.

Just curious, where are all the people that were praising the Vaquero a few weeks ago?
So far,no one has said it's a great detector.

kansa54,

Well Clint, it's like this, many people have opinions on what is best for them at the time. Metal detectorists are a funny bunch, buying and trying all the time, some of the guys on here buy and sell detectors every week. I know several people that do this, but I stick with what works for me, heck, I have an old Tesoro Toltec ll that I bought new in 1995. I still have it, and I have read negatives posted on the Toltec ll, but for me it works great. I would not put a lot of stock in what is being posted about the Vaquero, if it works for you, then that is great.

If you are worried that your Vaquero is not working up to par, bring it down to my house when you get the time. I have a bunch of older analog machines that are deep and accurate that we can compare it with. We can test your Vaquero out in my old test garden that has planted coins down to foot deep. Then you will have some valid test data, you got my phone #, give me a call sometime we can shoot the breeze.

I have a Vaquero and am quite fond of it . Have found lots of deep coins. I like it better than my previous detector a White. I just havent posted before now because I didnt want to appear confrontational. By the way , I only have the stock coil.

Learn it Learn It Learn It the Vaq has a Language all its own Just like all other detectors hours and hours of using it will be the deciding factor thought many times of selling mine but after using other Tesoros as well I have found the Vaq to be my crutch when needed . Recently bought an AT Pro " Garrett" never have liked Garrett much but I must say it is a capable machine when used in the senerio it is needed I use the Vaq many times and dug my first silver quarter with it after hours of digging rusted bottle caps at over 8 inches also dug a Mercury dime in a place I have hunted for many years with other Tesoros such as the Toltec II the Merc was over 9 inches faint but clearly a good signal one thing I will recommend is a very ,very , good set of Headphones hope you decide to keep the Vaq and Learn its language good Luck

I did learn the V, Barry. Something changed, whether its me or the detector, I don't know.
I spent about 4 hours out today. Found 12 cents. That's a dime and 2 pennies. Surface coins.
I was so upset today I almost shipped it off. Then to top it off I got out the Compadre and every swing, every jiggle it sounds off, almost like somethings loose.

Every time I hunt anymore I constantly remind myself of what Monte once said about getting used to hearing the loud clear signals, so I try so hard to listen for the deeper faint ones. Not happen'in.
I spent 2 years using a broken Silver Sabre before I realized it was the detector and not me. I am pretty stubborn, hope that doesn't happen......again.

What you need is a good test garden, I planted one 14 years ago. It starts with a gold ring at 5", Buffalo nickel surrounded by nails at 5" then silver dimes 5", 6", 8" then quarters at 9" to 10" halfs and silver dollars down to a foot deep. With this setup I can tell when a detector is not up to par, a couple of friends with E-Tracs could not hear the Buffalo nickel with iron all around it, All of my Tesoros and one of the White's that I own, the IDX Pro could hear it, the Minelabs could not.

I planted the coins in the spring when the plugs would come out whole using a sharpshooter. That way you do not disrupt the soil matrix and within a year they would react like a naturally buried coin. Pretty easy to do if your soil will plug good, sandy soil, forget it.

In That case sounds like you know it well enough dont give up on it ship it in and let Tesoro make sure it is in top notch working order seems a shame to put it out to pasture even though The compadre is a very capable machine as well hope to own one soon myself I do know frustration as well I bought a 5.75 widescan coil at the Texas show for my Vaq and could not wait to try it . once on the machine I tried to ground balance it would not even come close to GB decided to try and search a small park where I hunt at the beach and it was like the ground was covered in metal would not stop chaterring so Itraded it for the 3 x 6 coil and it works flawlessly hope you get the issues with it fixed HH

When you start doubting a detector ,that maybe perfectly A OK its is DOOMED ! to stay with you been there done that.

the vaquero is not for every detectorist, I wouldn't recommended to people who like to change detectors every single month. It took me some time to learn its behaviour and now I just simply love it. I have found with it items missed by a double-priced detector

Although I have been detecting for about 12 years, I have only had the opportunity to use about half a dozen detectors. I will say that by far the Vaquero suits me the best. In my opinion its a beast of a detector!! I have found 22 casings at 6 inches deep and I dug a nickel at 8" deep. It is very sensitive and I think that is what throws a lot of people. You really have to learn it. It talks to you a lot and has a very expresive language. Unlike some of my machines a beep is not always just a beep.

I took it out again today for about 3 hours to several old house lots. Found 1 nickel, about 2 inches. This V picks things up, it just seems to be the wrong things. It needs to go in and get checked.
On another note, thought I would take the Compadre out in the yard again and see if it really had a problem. 2 minutes after playing with I popped a '65 dime in an area that I test my other machines. Seemed to work well. Ran down to the school and in less than 5 minutes I popped up an 18" silver chain with 2 heart pendants. It came out nice and clean but I don't see any. 925 markings.
After that it started acting up. Looks like it might be a loose connection or broken wire at the coil.
Sadly, it needs to go in also. Wonder if I can get a volume discount.

Are you properly ground balancing? Proper GB is very important. My Vaq is a SUPER trust worthy machine that has found lots of great stuff!! I also own a Safari and T2 SE. I can honestly say that my Vaq can find about 75% of the stuff my Safari and T2 SE find with no problems. The Vaq isn't as deep as the Safari or T2, BUT I have NO problems finding silver dimes at 8"- 9" in my highly mineralized soils (NE Pennsylvania). I keep the disc just above iron, keep my thresh at 3pm, and my sens at 4-5 pm. I can pic up larger relics and musket balls at over a foot. When I say "larger" I mean silver dollar sized objects and up...

I regularly find old make up compacts and Victorian era jewelry in the 13" - 15" zone. The signals aren't always banging, but they are solid. You just have to learn it's language.

Eddie,
So far this year I have a1944 Half, 3 mercs,4 rosies, 6 war nickels, 82 wheats, 4 rings, neckless, 5 earrings and countless pennies and other assorted coins and objects. Something changed a little over a month ago. In fact, yesterday when usng the 5.75, I was really having an issue with GB. Just was not noticing any difference when trying to GB. Usually I notice a big swing with minor pot adjustments, not yesterday. I'm fairly certain I learned to speak Vac, but I dont speak gibberish and thats what my V has been speaking lately.
I appreciate the help.
