Vaquero WOW!

snoop & scoop

New member
I had an hour to spare before work today, so I took out the new Vaquero high-tone for the 1st time. I found (4) nickles, (3) dimes, (5) Penny's in 45 minutes. I've never found that many nickles at one time in all my years of detecting. The high-tone "Rocks"! I love it.

I've been thinking about getting that mod done, glad you like it. Well im officially sold. A soon as the snow starts flyin', off it will go to Arizona!

What exactly is the high tone mod? Thanks.

It takes the sound you hear up to a higher pitch than normal. It might just be me , but in the short time I was out today I seemed to be able to tell the difference between the sounds the different coins made, especially the nickels.

That is great! Glad you like it... there aint much better way to spend your spare time before work.
Im wondering though, if the number of nickles you found was the work of chance - that is, you happened to be in a spot where they happened to be?

I dont want to damoen your enthusiasm here, but I've had a Vaquero for some time now. I've also had most of the it's predecessors, in the bargain. I find the "V" to be wholly adequate as a beep and dig detector; quite good in fact.
But, it has never struck me as any kind of "target vacuum." Nor does it seem better on nickles than some other models I can name.

So now I'm wondering if there isnt more to your experience. For starters, just what were you using before, that the Vaquero seems so noteworthy?

I have a Tiger Shark, and had a Cibola (sold) before the Vaquero. What you say may be true, but I've never come accross a concentration of nickles, in an area I know has been hunted to death, before.

I hear a lot of positive feedback on the high tone Cibola and Vaquero. I hunt with the Tejon in vco mode and the tone averages a good bit higher in pitch than the normal tone Cibola. After hunting with the Tejon or other detectors, it takes a little longer for me to start hearing the Cibola again than when going from the Cibola to the others.

I've been detecting for 22 years now and I've learned one thing, if I've learned anything: sometimes, that which we "know" isn't fact at all. I turned up a silver half dollar last season in a wood chip tot lot, not 300 yards from my house. If you would have asked me prior to that hunt, I would have assured you that something like that could not be there.

So congrats on your finds are in order.

Do you think the High tone mod made the difference?

No, I don't think the high tone was the reason. I was just amazed, because I had gone over that area with the Tiger Shark, and Cibola, and my friends with Garretts had hit it to. None of us found any of these, and you could tell they had been there for a while.

What was your DISC and SENS set at, and how were you ground balanced? Were you SuperTuned?

sensitivity was at 8, disc at 1 mark before the 5 cent. no super tune, as the area is very rocky, and coins do not go that deep. Ground balance was done by the book.

"target vacuum."

dahut ,in 22 years of detecting what detector does strike you as a target vacuum ?

The one that is where the targets are.

Honestly, there is no such thing, no 'magic bullet'. You cannot draw in goodies, like some detecting 'black hole.'
There is always a reason for a find, and one can only find what is already there.

I thought the answer would be different than this based on how you posted it, kinda downplaying the Vaqueros performance. One thing the Vaquero does is miss few if any targets in its range. deciding what they are by its tone is another thread altogether:drinking:

I'm not down playing the Vaquero, even if I am not the most staunch advocate of the machine itself. I have owned every detector in that line except the Eldorado, and have found them to be able performers. Good is good, after all.
I also think they get an aura of 'mystique' around them that is often well, over-hyped.
Simply put, they are basic beep-dig performers. You can milk some more "nuance" from them with effort, but I think they meet the intent behind their design quite well.
I was more interested here in reducing the aura a bit, so as to determine if there was something unusual in the circumstances or the detector itself. It seems there was not.

Take a breath guys! Maybe I said it wrong, As I said in a previous post when I was thinking of buying the Vaquero, I have some hearing loss. With my other detectors, when they hit a target it all sounded the same to me. With the high tone, I can tell the difference. The nickles seemed to be a softer sound (tone) to me, also the dimes were slightly different than the penny's, and nickles. It seems that I hear this detector better than my others. OK!

You know everyone gets suckered in by all these latest and greatest metal detectors being made by other manufactures with these fancy new tv screens, full band spectrum, detectors that sound like a orchestra playing that cost $1500.00.And come to find out after reading about these high priced metal detectors they are failing in less than two years. Why?because they are made with to much crap in the electronic circuits. And finding out these same detector manufactures are letting there customers down when the detector fails. We do take these things out in a hostel environment to look for lost items of the past.I have never herd one complaint about Tesoro customer service, but read the forum on other metal detector customer service.Detectorist can't get there detector serviced for two month's and then they are hit by a big bill.Tesoro is the best in my book.Tesoro knows that they have a metal detector that will match or beat the latest and greatest detector coming out by the company that will not even stand by it like Tesoro does,so they just sit back and laugh.

I have said it before, but I will be glad to say it again. Vaquero in the morning, Vaquero in the evening, Vaquero in the noon day sun, Vaquero when its hot, Vaquero when its cold and Vaquero when is wet. It is just the best machine that I have ever used period. It is very stable and if you want depth it will run super tuned without popping and crackling. When set normal I can tell differences in tone on different targets, maybe not perfect, but good enough to get a Idea of what is there. I have found more gold with this machine on land than any other. It is a small gold magnet. I have dug a very small gold ring at 7 inches and have never had another machine do that. I may go to a different machine sometime, but right now I really like my V. Bill in Texas
