First of all - go out there and enjoy yourself. Finding gold is exciting but if your whole focus is getting the gold then having a good time may be lost. Confidence in my equipment is a huge part of my hunting experience. Just like when I pick up my bow or my rifle in the fall to go hunting, if I am not fully confident in the equipment and my ability, my experience will be diminished, especially if my whole focus is on getting "the big one". If I don't "get the big one" I may go home questioning myself and maybe blaming my equipment or myself. Like Steve said, "finding gold is 95% operator". Confidence is a big part of the process. Only until you know your equipment inside and out can you make a decision about what your next machine should be and that, of course, depends on where and what you hunt. To many people buy a machine on the reputation of the machines ability and forget the operator is really what finds the gold. Having said that, I would like to say I am a small coil type hunter. Especially in trashy ground and most of the ground I have hunted is trashy so small coils are the ticket. I would never settle for just one machine as there are to many applications and variations of places to hunt for gold. My Infinium with the 8 mono is my "go to" machine and does an acceptable job at finding sub-gram gold but is slow going in trashy ground and pinpointing can be a problem. At this time I have the small DD on my wish list for this machine. My second machine is the AT Gold which, when using the 5x8 DD, is hard to beat for sifting thru the trash and does a good job at finding the crumbs but I must say does not do as good a job as the Finny in highly mineralized ground. Now, I know I want a third machine and have focused on the GB2. I feel with these 3 machines I have the confidence I need to go out and have a good and enjoyable time in the field with a good chance of finding some au. I may not find the "big one" but I know I'll have an enjoyable experience. No matter what machine/machines you chose learn it intimately before you give up on it. Happy hunting to all.
