V3i Two Part Question

Sgt. Silverman

Active member
My name is Sgt. Silverman :usaa:and I am new to the forum. I just purchased the V3i two weeks ago and have been out with it twice. The first time I ran it with factory settings only and once I got home I spent some time putting together a Deep Silver program.
As you can see by the picture below, my second time out I was rewarded with silver; a 43P Mercury dime :)(at 3 inches) and three Lincoln

turn off discrimanate audio modulation that will make all targets the same volume, also try a buried coin test with and without boost, might help. someone closer to you will have more soil specific advice.

You must be running Mixed Mode.

(I was hoping that the polar plot screen would compensate for the tone hearing loss as a visualization tool for what I

I'd try trying to find another V user to hunt with and compare visual to audio response so you can "see" what those deep targets look like (besides modulation off) and investigate fully which tones you do hear best......with headphones designed to have response in your hearing range. (Audiophile headphones have more choices.) Good luck and bet there is more than one avenue to pursue.

Thanks everyone for the feedback, I really appreciate it! Rob, I will correct the VDI tones and then I will try to post once I can get back out in the field. NW1886, is there a better audiophile headphone over another?

Yes from what I read above this will keep the deep targets to have a loud tone..And of course some real deep targets will have a dirty tone so look at you VDI and dig what looks good not always sounds good.

Rat phones are no longer made. They were my favorite. They were guys with hearing problems because they had more of a bass sound. A used pair just sold on the classifies.

Sgt., is there anything that can help your hearing? Many of us have less then perfect hearing. Mine came from being around too many loud machines.

With this generation liking that thumping bass, I bet there are some real lower toned ones. I'd check out an audiophile forum that is geared towards speakers and ask there. The whole audio world is huge and bet there would be a solution. My experiences in looking for this kind of thing is probably too mainstream and my choices wouldn't match your needs. (Wish I still had contact info for a guy I used to work with......he'd spout off a bunch of good suggestions!)

This might sound silly but since you are fairly new to the V3i, I can only assume that you have the target volume turned up on the V?

i have a pair of deep woods gray ghost phones with target volume at 60 out of 69 and they are very loud, almost too loud, but i like targets to really scream HEY DIG ME UP! modulation off, target volume up should do it, unless your almost completely deaf. even the stock royal gt phones go pretty loud, they are just uncomfortable.

Lowboy: Thanks for the tip on the dirty tone so I will try to listen for these tones.

Rob: To answer your question there is one thing that can help my hearing....and I am going to try to exhaust all of my options before I go down the hearing aid road. :sadwalk: I was pretty foolish when I was in the service so I only have myself to blame. When I went for my last hearing test I just sat in the chair with my thumb hovering over the red button and the hearing specialist came to the door and said, "I have been sending you tones for over two minutes and you haven't moved." Then she told me that I was, for lack of a better term, half deaf...I told her to just tell my wife that because she keeps calling it selective hearing! I appreciate all of the help with the VDI tones. I set everything at 120, shut off the modulation, and kicked the RD back up to 90. I will be able to test everything on Saturday so I will try to post with the results. Again thanks so much for the help Rob!

Larry: Hey, great question and I know it had to be asked. I have the target volume set to 58 and have boosted the QZ-99 headphones up as far as I can tolerate so surface targets don't destroy whatever hearing I do have left!

Kyledfx: I have had my eye on the Black Widow headphones but have not heard a lot of feedback on how well they work. I might just go the Gray Ghost road with either the Deep Woods as you have suggested or the Ultimate Gray Ghost headphones. Thanks for the advice.

Congrats on your purchase of the V3i Sarge :bthumb: I bought mine soon after they upgraded from the V3, I was using an MXT before and still have it. Congrats on finding silver on your second time out! I also found silver on my second time out too and I was using the factory deep silver program, it nailed a sterling ring that was very deep and in a spot I'd hammered many times before. Once you really get the hang of the detector you probably won't want anything else, except maybe a good water detector.

Sgt. Silverman, I too have a hearing loss and also use the Black Widows. I love them! They have fairly deep cups so they don't hurt your ears after an hour or two. They also filter out ambient noise to allow me to hear those deep targets better. Another feature is individual volume controls to allow you to tune to your hearing needs. I have used these for over 6 years now and have no complaints!
