V3i problems?

jeffery71

New member
Hi all, I just got a new V3i and am having some problems. I have owned a 6000di Pro for 20 years so I am familiar with metal detectors, although the V3i is completely new to me. I am having alot of false signals. Using the stock coin&jewelry program if I ground balance and then try searching it is constant false signals, even if I hold the coil up in the air waist high it is still constant false signals. There are no power lines. I live in the middle of nowhere!. If I turn the sensitivity down to 3 then it seams to be ok in the air it will only occasionally false, but I still get false signals on the ground, not as many though. I know there will be a learning curve to this detector but at this point I'm disappointed with it compared to my 6000. Also it seams to be more noticeable when I am swinging the detector, especially changing directions more so when changing from right to left.

I am gonna give Whites a call when they open. To me it seams like the coil is messed up. But I really don't know..

Thanks

Jeff Tice

It sounds like a coil problem to me too and a call to service will get prompt attention. Do you have a local dealer to swap coils?

Wow that was a quick reply!.. No unfortunatly I don't have a dealer around here. I ordered it online... I will give Whites a call.. I hope they are open today.

You can try to reduce the gain as well, check your connections make sure they're ok. (I'd disconnect the connector to the coil, and reconnect just to make sure)

Check to make sure you don't have any overhead power wires close to you when you're giving it a try. And I'm assuming you were getting the falsing outside, somewhere.

I assume you are outdoors when you tried it. :detecting:

This was good advice: check your connections make sure they're ok. (I'd disconnect the connector to the coil, and reconnect just to make sure)

Even though you live in the middle of nowhere, you may also want to try a different location.

Did you buy it used or new from an online dealer?

It does sound like a coil problem ... it should not be falsing when held in the air with the stock coin and jewelry program.

I agree it sounds like a coil problem, how does it do on other programs? Just a thought switch over to the "High Trash" program and see what happens. if that makes it quite then you know to adjust your all metal and recovery delay and so on.

This is a new detector purchased online from a large dealer in Florida. I can't imagine it would be old stock but I suppose its possible. I did some checks to see if it is a bad coil as was suggested on the Whites Forum.
I held it in the air with tb off and RX15 and it does not overload. Setting RX down to 3 and tapping the coil doesn't seam to give a false. If I move the coil in the air at RX3 it will false some but not alot and if I turn the RX up it will false without moving the coil ALOT. I am not moving it rough or fast just what I would call normal. I am outside and to make sure it wasn't EMI I am about 1/4 mile from the closest source of EMI (my house). I tried other stock programs and they all do the same. Some are worse some may be better. I think its more that it elemenates some of the false signals with the discrimation settings of some of the programs. When I have the coil in the air it is constantly flashing "Coin & Jewelry" and "Fast Track>>>>" "<<<<Fast Track" .. I assume that has something to do with the ground balancing.

Think I will call Whites Monday... In the mean time I may order and SEF coil for it.

Thanks for everyones help!!

Jeff

Jeff, you need to read the manual. You would see the flashing, actually, changing coin and jewelry and tracking is normal. Here is where a dealer or knowledgeable user would help. I'm thinking your V3i might be OK ???? Maybe not but this above action is not a problem. Could you describe your false signals in detail. Usually bad coils would overload on the RX15. Not that it can't happen but I haven't heard of a bad D2 in ages. What is your signal noise reading? If your tracking is switching seem like you may not have ground balanced correctly or your tracking is set wrong. How are you ground balancing?

It's easy to have accidentally got a setting way out of range.
Rob

You did do a manual ground balance didnt you?

Just asking cause this is a new detector and might be all out of whack.

I would wait on getting that S.E.F. coil until you had some time with the stock V3i coil ... it is a good DD coil.
I think I would consider a 300 concentric coil before the S.E.F DD for a second coil.
The S.E.F. would be too much like the original coil.

Yeah I ground balanced.. Just like the manual says... Hold pinpoint trigger hold enter.. Pump the coil up and down on the ground.. release enter release pinpoint..... The ONLY way I can get it to stop constantly giving false signals in the air is to turn the gain down to either RX2 or 3 and even then it will still give a false signal in the air when I change directions from right to left.. If I leave it at the stock coin & jewelry setting of RX7 it is CONSTANTLY sounding off signals all over the vdi range when I am holding the coil up in the air. If you have ever used an old 6000 around electric lines and seen the needle bouncing all over the place that is how the V3i is acting only there is no emi in the area. I wish I had another coil to plug into it to try.

WOW I acutally found a video on Youtube of another guys v3i and this sounds just like mine. Youtube Video of another guys V3i

Sure does sound like a bad coil...... I would also hold off on purchasing a SEF coil as they are not 100% compatible with the v3. I have had one and you will not be able to run the 22.5 frequency at an average gain setting, but you could luck out and get one that does.

I can't tell anything from the video. First he didn't ground balance, and that means balance it until it is quiet, not just 4 times. For all I know his offset is a +5 or anywhere else.

You could delete and reinstall your coin and jewelry program. Try another program. Did you loosen and reconnect the coil cable? This was one guys problem. Again what is the signal % reading? I want to know how much noise it has. What does it do with the coil disconnected? What does the battery voltage read? What is your frequency offset?

I hunted a site in Galesburg and my V3i is perfect. I turned it on and it acted much like the video. I quieted it down but I had information from my V3 to work with. That's why asked questions to get some clues. In my case I needed several ground balances changing my frequency offset and as well as using the correlate mode. These were made after checking signal and noise readings. It ran great and Larry and I cleaned up in that yard.

Of course changing coils would be best but you don't have one or a dealer to loan you one.. Please check the asked questions. There is slim chance a master reset could help but you will need to ask Whites for that information.

Yeah I noticed he didn't' ground balance. I have though... Like I said I have tried all of the programs that it came with they all do basically the same. I did disconnect the coil actually that was the first thing I checked when its disconnected its quiet. The battery is fine it was around 11 volts now its over 10 volts cant' remember without looking. I have tried all of the frequency offsets doesn't make any difference... I had to look up signal noise reading in the manual (that's neat!) The signal varies from 5.8 to 6.8 and the noise is all over the place from .05 to 30. With the coil unplugged signal is 4.8 and noise is about .03 I was in the middle of a wide open field when I did this test and there is nothing around for at least a quarter mile.

Thanks

Jeff

Well like you said, I guess you will have to call. BOY a second coil would have answered it right off. I bought my first detector on line. All my others I got from a dealer, what was nice was it was assembled and checked out before I left the shop. If you don't have a good dealer close you can't help it.:ranting:

If it is quiet with the coil disconnected it is probably the coil.

Yeah, Closest dealer is 1 1/2+ hour away. At this point it would have been well worth the drive though. I never even thought to look for a local dealer, I bought this detector from the same place I bought my 6000 years ago.

I'm sure the 6000 coil won't work to just test with the v3i will it?

Thanks

Jeff

I saw some advice you got in another site some is good and some is not. Taking the battery out will do nothing on a V3i. I wish i had my hands on it. No saying the coil isn't the problem but since you don't overload at RX15 and don't get noise bumming it I just don't know. These were usually the symptoms of a bad D2.

I am sending you a PM.

I have a few thoughts on this. First off, in the video you can see that the guy is standing near his house because you can see the exhaust pipe on the roof in the reflection. That means he could have emi from someplace. One thing I have had problems with as far as emi is concerned is electric fences and underground dog fences. I was hunting in the middle of nowhere this past summer and was getting alot of emi from a electric fence on a neighbors property. I have noticed that if you are getting this type of emi,..it will be like a rhythm your detector. Example...mine would go....beep, beep, beep...then pause for about two seconds and then repeat. This is just a observation that I have noticed and may not be your problem at all. I would go to another location say 5 miles away where you know there is no electric fences and try it. The middle of the woods is a great place!

I had today off I looked up on the internet and found that Whites of Mid Atlantic was about 3 hours from my house. I decided to go see what they thought of it. First they are great and I highly recommend them for anyone looking to purchase or get some help!. They changed the coil for me and it works great now! I can turn it up to RX15 in the house and it is quite! (before I could only turn up to 2 or 3 outside and even then it sounded off some!). He also showed me some other things about the detector. I think I'm gonna really like it now. For anyone else who has problems as I described I wouldn't' mess around changing a bunch of settings. I would go straight to getting a different coil for it!

Thanks to everyone for all of your help!

Jeff
