Using Two Different Ground Filters and Sweep Speeds Simultaneously

Well, unfortunately I got skunked this weekend. I picked a spot that looked awesome, but apparently it has been hit hard over the years. You never know until you try. The site was almost completely void of any non-ferrous signals. I even had to double check to make sure I was not rejecting good targets!! Below is a pic of me detecting at the site. It was still a nice outing with great scenery despite the continuous rainfall.

The lack of targets did give me the opportunity to try different settings, and I came up with a good idea that allows the user to search in two modes at once, using two different sweep speeds and filter settings. The V3 has two search modes "Search" (Trigger in middle) and "Analysis" (Trigger forward). The default on the V3 is set to match Ground Filter, Recovery Delay, and SAT in both of these modes. Here is how turning off "Match" can benefit the user:

When in your general "Search" mode, you want to have a fairly brisk sweep speed, when the area is not too trashy. In "Search" mode your optimum settings would be a higher Ground Filter, and a Recovery Delay that fits your liking. When you encounter a good, or a questionable signal, you may wish to slow your sweep speed and increase your Recovery Delay. By keeping the Analysis mode set to a lower Ground Filter and Higher Recovery Delay, it will allow for a slower sweep, giving the V3 more time to analyze the target. A simple flick of the switch is all it takes.

I tried this, and it worked in theory, but I did not encounter any good targets to try it on. Has anyone else tried this?

I havent tried it Neil, but it sounds like a hell of a good idea! I'll definately be trying it when I get my coil back.

I'll have to give your idea a try Neil, sounds like a good one. Your picture is great, I bet White's or one of the magazines would be interested in it too..............

How much customization can be made between the two search modes?

According to the manual there are three (3) settings that can be set to different levels from within the "Filters & Speed" menu. They are
  1. Ground Filter
  2. Recovery Delay
  3. S.A.T.

In Mixed Mode only you can change the Spectragraph settings differently from within the "Live Search Screen" menu. You can change things such as the Fade Rate, Single Sweep, Resolution, etc. to operate independently in Search and Analysis modes as well.

I am glad you asked because I now realize I can set the Analyze mode to Single Sweep. I think this may make the analyze screen more useful. I have found that if you don't get a good graph on the first sweep, the fade is much too long, rendering it useless.

Neal, Thank you for the additional information.

That is a good thing to consider. As time goes on, it will be nice to find ways to get more usefulness out of the analyze screen and other stuff. The analyze is proving to be a massive help in jewelry for me. It isn't so much as accuracy but in consistency where it is proving useful (in ground that is loaded with fertilizers and poor drainage). Hopefully that can be further tuned in better with single sweep and other settings like you were saying. One thing at a time....
