Used XL Pro came today.

Hi:
It came today with the three coils.
I thought the indicator face was scuffed but it turned out to be tape residue.
It came off easy.
There is a lot of tape residue on the detector shaft and box.
Can I use goo be gone to take it of.
What can I use to clean it.
Just soap and water. I know you can rub out the lettering on the box if you are not careful.
anyone know the best way to clean it
I am going through detectors like crazy.
I took it out for ten minutes with the 950 coil and know that it really has to be ground balanced well to get good depth but also the gain and signal
are major.
I will keep it for awhile and if I don't like it I will see what I can trade it for.I'm going to practice with it in my yard for a couple of days.
Yep! this is way heavier than the Silver Umax. David
Good hunting to us all.

dishwashing liquid should soften it enough to just wipe off!..gb and signal balance are critical to proper operation, and MUST be in balance!..the detector operates most efficiently (in trash) with the 6" coil on,AND the "mode" set to (s.a.t)..with this combination of settings, and coil, you can slow down and hunt effectively in moderate to heavy trash!

Be very careful cleaning the control box.--Can't understand why there would be tape/tape residue on the box?--Previous owner might have wrapped & taped the coil cable to the shaft (with a cheap tape that left residue) & that's sort of understandable--but the box?---Can't understand that one.--Have you very carefully examined the box for any damage?---On the shaft you can use "Goop" hand cleaner (comes in a tube) & plenty of elbow grease (rubbing).--Then apply a thin coat of Armor All to the outside of the shaft & wipe to a shine.--You can do that on the coil cover to.---By the way--what kind of condition are the coils in?----Give the whole unit a good testing in your test garden or in field hunting.--If there's any problems with the unit they should show up quickly.---The XL PRO is a great machine.-------Del

Yes it is heavier than the Tesoro uMax series, that I also like a lot. The XL Pro is pretty well balanced so if you don't rush the swing, it doesn't torque the body. Unbalanced is more of a fatigue issue for me than total weight (within limits).

I'm still pretty new with the XL Pro too. I am finding the XL Pro finds dimes like crazy in some areas I've hit very hard with my Tesoros.

Here's a pic but you can't tell because it looks better than it is.
There are no scratches or digs but it needs a good cleaning.
the coils show wear but I will test them tomorrow.
I paid $465 which I should get back for it if I want to sell it.
I tried it today for about ten minutes and ground balanced it but I will have to practice it over and over.
anyway I searched in my back yard which had quite a few targets but I hardly dug any but just the same there are plenty in my yard.

This house was built in 1916 and before that they said this was farmland. I did find this amusement center games license down about 6 " with a different detector. It expired in July 1936.
I went to some spots that I new had targets found with another detector but not dug yet. I didn't get as many beeps but then I realized it was in disc mode and one target says nickel at 9" and another a dime at 7"
I will dig them tomorrow after I try all three coils
I will take pictures in the daylight tomorrow.

Anything orange based will get tha tape goo off in a jiffy without damaging the paint, but it may remove any decals on the box...

HH,

Use just a tad of olive oil then dish soap and water. (Multiple apps. of oil, with a gentle wipe in between, for the thicker residue.) No hard rubbing and can be used on a grip but... you have to "dry wipe" with just a film of oil on a rag and rinse it very well as a penetrating residue can shorten the life of the material. I do resto work and have been using olive oil as a loosener for years. The only general rules are the more pliant the material, the more you have to worry about leaving a residue and... residue can yellow on light colors/darken dark absobative surfaces. Olive oil is gentle, always on hand, quick, and it just works. On tougher residues, adding a few drops of paint thinner can help.

The issue with commercially branded "Goo Cleaners" is they all jump on a name recognition "bandwagon",can have everything from abrasives to harsh chems and... can be more surface specific (w/lotsa fine print). Some can be gentle but.... I have had to repair a lot of failed attempts over the years!

And like Monte suggested, a thin coat of wax makes for easy cleaning and protection.

OK I'll try it thanks

I went out for awhile with just the 950 coil and think I am getting the ground balance right.
Thanks Monte.
I dug what I thought were good signals at the time, one was a 1955 penny and the rest nails and iron,
All were about 4 or 5" down. but I think I see light at the end of the tunnel. Only one was deep about 7 " and it turned out to be what looks like a large square nail.
It was in soil mixed with ashes, maybe a fire pit .
This detector is really something. It picks up targets all over the back yard.
I think there must have been a couple of sheds or some kind of structure here years ago.
Lots of nails and I found some roofing material buried in the ground.
If I find anything of value I will post a pic.

David

If anyone is to do any cleaning on plastic material it is best to use lighter fluid. Lighter fluild is naptha. This solvent is great for cleaning plastic material and will remove all gummy residue. If you have any doubts concerning the material to be cleaned, I then suggest to test in a small indiscriminate area first.

Boy it did the job thanks.
it looks 10 times better than when I received it the still in some goop on the back cover.
I 'll take it off tomorrow. thanks a lot it looks great now.

Why wouldn't the seller do all that clean up work before he ever sold it??----I ALWAYS go out in my shop & clean up anything really good (if it needs it) that I have sold before I ever ship it out.---It's crazy & a real pain in the b--- haveing to do all that for something you paid good money for.-------Del

I don,t know why he didn't clean it. The pics he had were of the detector on the ground with the three coils and detector bag.
--I would have cleaned it but maybe he thought the XL pro with three coils for $465 shipped I should clean it myself.
Anyway here is my other problem.
Targets!
Did you ever see one of those helicopters flying over a fire and drop tons of water on the fire.
Well instead of water, substitute iron and nails and even some long screw rods with threads all the way up the rod and maybe 6" deep down .

Can't tell you how many I have dug ,I must be doing something wrong. If I get a beep I will X it out and set the coil on the ground with the trigger pulled back.
almost everything is about 6" down,a few even deeper. I have had a lot of detectors in my yard and it's true I didn't dig most of them but nothing and I mean nothing even comes close to this XL PRO for finding targets.

The trigger pulled back after centering should just be for depth right ?
anyway finding lots and lots of nails.
I don't seem to be discriminating them out.
I brought it indoors and set it in the chair and turned all to factory preset and tried some nails and iron that I dug previously and
the discrimination worked.
Maybe I am not ground balancing or maybe I should hunt in factory preset until I know what I'm doing.
David

keep in factory pre set,and make sure you gb,and adjust the signal balance too!..then she should "run"!..nails "should" be taken out at the factory preset, but i can tell you that "all" bets are off,IF the detector is NOT properly ground balanced,AND signal balance is NOT adjusted for the site hunted!....crtical adjustments on THIS detector!..to emphasize the point!..,discrimination WILL be off,as well as overall depth,AND accurate depth readings on coins too!

I can't disc them out completely. Even if I turn it to max I still get like clipped signals. I am getting better though found another Key and a Roosevelt dime and about three pennies.
I will have to put the black 5.3 max on tomorrow.Just too many targets.
The coins seem to have a richer sound.Sometimes I recognize it and other times think I heard it.almost echo like.
When I put the 5.3 on tomorrow I will be able to ground balance it better.
I think I am balancing it right but you never know. I do it the way Monte suggested
David

follow monte's advice!..he has many years experience on the xl pro,and he echos my sentiments exactly in it's proper operation!..

David----You're getting some good advice here from guys that know what they're talkin about.---Don't panic, just take it slow & easy with it (XL PRO), read the manual over & over.---It will all come together for you in a bit.---It takes all of us a little time to get on to a new detector.---Unless there is actually something wrong with the detector, you'll do JUST FINE with that XL PRO.------Del
