:usaflag: Short hunt tonight without headphones....

I always hunted without headphones for a long time(until Brian hooked me up). Anyways I usually stuck to the woods for this reason and when I did get some I strted hunting lawns and it opened a whole new world. Later I started hunting more with my buddy Donnie and he hates headphones as we ike to wander and it is difficult to hear each other when we get "lost" on our treasure trails and wonder where the other guy is. It is also nice to hear the birds and not worry about the cable hanging up etc. When we hunt the woods or places out of the way I don't usually where them either. I liked the setting on the DFX of modulation "off" so the deep signals sounded off loud also. Kind of wild how headphones can shape one's hunting style.

I do however prefer to hunt with a decent set of headphones. The noises a detector can make can be very annoying to other people in the area, so headphones at least eliminate that problem. Headphones also help me to concentrate and focus more on the signal. Plus its supposed to give you 30% longer battery life.

I have done tests with modulation on, and modulation off, and have found that if the detector can reach it, it will respond with a good loud tone. There was no difference in the depth detection, "on" or "off". Once the detector sounds off, I then check depth and VDI numbers, if the target isn't too deep (under 6 inches) If its deep, I just concentrate more on the tone of the target.

good points Vernon. I did get my first set of good headphones last week(Ratphones) since the X5 doesn't have the modulation adjustment and I have tried it w/o headphones so it wiill be interesting to try the X5 and phones in the field.
