:usaflag:I am aware that we talk about metal detector finds here, but I have developed a passion for old coins since I began detecting. So..in very small increments..so's not to tick off my wife...I am purchasing old silver. And I wanted to share with my friends here my first purchase..a Morgan Dollar. It's a beautiful old 1884-O coin and I can't wait to see it in my hands. Enjoy !!

On another note..more pertaining to this forum's purpose...I found a '39 nickel in my next-door neighbor's front yard yesterday.

I am an avid coin collector. I've assembled almost a complete collection of 20th century US silver coins which has taken me many years. Here's my suggestion to you. If you're just starting out, pick one coin and concentrate on it. Morgan dollars seem to strike your fancy. Go for it. Set a goal. I'm going to buy one a month. I'm going to use my MD clad to buy one when I accumulate enough. Something like that. Buy coins that have nice eye appeal. Don't fixate on grade. I'd avoid coins that have been cleaned or polished and you should never clean or polish any coin that you deem collectible. Be smart about buying. There are tons of places you can buy US silver coins at very fair prices. Garage and estate sales are probably the best for me. I bought a little box of junk at a garage sale last week that had a 1925S Peace dollar in it. Total cost? $10.00. Also in the box were about 10 wheat cents, an IH penny, some cool tokens. Also some stamps and old post cards. Also let your friends know you are collecting. They might be a source for reasonably priced coins. Everybody seems to have a little box of old curiosities that they don't know what to do with. Good luck with your collecting. It's a lot of fun.

:usaflag:Thanks Chris...This coin actually came out of a belt buckle in which it was encapsulated. The woman inherited it and said she had no use for it. I was drawn to the details and the patina..definately not the price tag. I can't afford those 3 or 4-figure coins anyways. A friend told me that it appears to have never been cleaned. And I have seen other 1884-O Morgans that have much more wear on them sell for what I paid for this one...which was around $20. I like any old silver (and gold) coins, but I will try to heed your advice and stick to one type for now.
