:usaflag:A day at the beach..

:usaflag:I decided since it was a bit rainy I would hit the local swimming hole. Got out an old pair of sneakers, made a sand scoop out of a small coffee can and headed out. The beach is part of a DNR maintained campground, so I went up to the summer caretaker's shack and made sure it was ok. Nice old guy...he just said to make sure I did'nt leave any "ankle-breakers" (holes). I only wandered out to about over my knees in water.. '37 buffalo nickel was 1st find of the day....'41 wheatie...I just about dropped a turd when I saw that gold sac' turn over in the sand. Not the gold I was hoping for but, hey..a dollar is a dollar no matter how it's served. And the buffalo nickel is worth a buck anyways..good times.

And actually it was more like two hours at the beach, not a whole day.

Mcdave were you using the ace250? or do you have somthing else for the beaches?

:usaflag:Ace 250...very carefully.

A dozen miles down the road I came across the foundation of an old bridge along a river (actually a creek) I did some research and found a map of the area from 1878 it shows the bridge. Last weekend I was detecting in a local park and ran into an archaeologist and was telling him about the old bridge site. He got pretty excited when I told him the water is only about knee deep in that area. He said I need to take my detector out there and search both sides of where the bridge was. He said its hard to tell what I might find. I like that idea but I don't like the idea of taking my ace250 into the water (I am pretty clumsy).I might have to invest in something I won't ruin if I drop . Guess I'll just wait and see. Maybe I'll get brave.

:usaflag:Yeah if you can afford a water detector just go that route. One thing I do when I'm in the water like that, is I shut off my detector once I decide to dig a signal. That way if I do drop it, at least it won't fry anything. I can let it dry out and maybe get lucky.

What does the buffalo nickel register at? Does it sound like junk or does the "belltone" sound off? I would bench test it, but I've never even seen a buffalo nickel haha.

:usaflag:I don't get belltones for nickels or anything else that hits on 5 cents. Just the standard "beep"..but not the iron tone. Actually I have iron notched out so I don't hear that tone at all.

The buffalo chimes in as a solid nickel every time..well, at least the three times that I have found one.

Rock on bud!! nice finds there Dave..HH!

Hey McDave,

On page 7 of the Modification Forum khouse describes a great mod for water-proofing your Ace!!

The post is from August 2007 and full of info and great pictures so you can maybe protect your detector while wading!

Good Luck,

CJ

Nice finds. Thanks for the photos. That can is a good idea.
Blade 310, I'd hit that area as soon as I could and as hard as I could. I suffered the loss of two nice sites due to procratination.
