Since I found the two gold rings on 1-24-12 I have water-hunted 381/4 Hours in all kinds of weather and recovered 433 targets!

There was some clad, scrap brass, fishing tackle and a few silver items I call "keepers", but no gold since then!

Many sharp and down-right dangerous items were removed from these "Family" beaches!

As an Old Hunter who has "seen the elephant", I know that treasure hunting is like a game of dice with no constant winners, making this a game that is [size=large]not about the gold, but about the hunt!![/size]

Great post, CJ, and it does help (everyone) to keep things in perspective. Sometimes it's easy to forget, when we see the great jewellery finds (of various people) tht they put in long hard hours to achieve those reqards. But to us, the hunters, it has to be the fun and thrill of the hunt, otherwise common sense would prevail and we just wouldn't bother

I take all my trash with but Im sorry to say, the beer cans stay behind, and juice boxes

There is a mesh bag attatched to the rear of my sifter for bottles, cans and other large targets I encounter RP.

Removing these things is a pain, but for me, necessary as part of my enjoying the hunt.

Veteran Hunters certainly can relate to and appreciate what I'm sharing above.

New Hunters and people contemplating enjoying this hobby can have a more complete understanding of Treasure Hunting with a metal detector from these stats.

As I sit here in an early 19 Degree, windy morning in Connecticut, I can recall many of the wonderful targets I recovered both for myself and also for others who had lost a cherished metal object. (As a plumbing repairman I have located buried wells and traced underground pipes too.)


Each and every target recovered, even those tiny bits of metal I have a tough time locating in my sifter, stir within me anticipation, delight when I find it and gratitude that I am still able to enjoy this hobby.


Few activities I've been envolved with in my 70+ years have brought me as much satisfaction and joy as this hobby!

As one that hasn't tried water hunting yet, I appreciate your posts as well. Most beaches I have been too are so bad with trash I wondered if anyone really cared. Thanks for what your doing in regards of the trash. I am trying to learn this style of hunting as I just purchased a Duel Field.

Jack, from years of hunting I have learned a lot and enjoy sharing what i've learned with anyone willing to listen (Ask my Friends!), but I learn something new about our hobby everyday even after all these years.

CJ you are soooo RIGHT the number of gold finds compared to the number of good finds
to the number of JUNK finds are all of what you stated, and every junk find takes the same amount
of time if not longer to dig as a gold or good find.
I dig and keep all targets then go back over the area 2 to 3 times to check for whispers.
All of this came from a small fresh water beach
Also with all of this was almost 400 clad coins
This was not a virgin beach I met 3 other detectorist there with high end detectors, it seemed they would just
dig surface coins and I also found a lot of pull tabs in there filled holes that they left.
Time 10 weeks about 4 times a week and 4 to 6 hours a time

Jim, if I were to look up the words Master Hunter in the Treasure Hunting Dictionary I would find your picture!!

It doesn't really matter how long a person has been hunting, it's how well his efforts are paying off in total finds and keepers!

Jim, you have enough lead there to make your own diving belt weights.... scrap metal prices for that might not be terrible if they weight is enough.
