I just bought a new v3 like 14 days ago and already after spending over 1000 for a metal detector I now need to spend more for it to compete withe the lesser priced detectors that cant tell the diff from a nickel or a pull tab sucks to be me

Hi,

I too have recently purchased a V3....I have also gotten the upgrade to V3i. You dont have to get the upgrade if you dont want too, as the standard v3 will work just fine. There is just more things and options etc to use and utilize. Not a recall but an upgrade. There is a difference.

Being a recent owner, I have found it a short time the V3 can tell the difference between nickels and pull tabs. It is not 100 percent but most of time, it works!. You have to practice a bit, study and some experimentation to be sucessful. I personally think the v3 is probably the best all around detector out there, but at first I didnt really know what I was doing and furthermore, didnt know what I had for options. The analyzation screen of the v3 does very well and the v3i even better.

In sum, I do think the price for the upgrade is worth it....especially when Whites has the best customer service of just about any business,,,,not just in the metal detecting realm. You can count on them for help, service and whatever else they can do for you. Besides, when and IF you sell the v3i...you will get your money back because your detector will be worth more....like money in the bank...so to speak.

With a little practice, nickels will be abundant and tabs few if that is your goal. In my ground, nickels will ID at 20-22 and tabs slightly higher. Try some air tests and see where they ID at. There are several common tabs and the VDI will often be the same so you can mentally reject those targets. In a prior post you said you wanted to find gold rings and that is a different story. Gold rings, depending on size and purity, can and will come in anywhere between +9 to +60 and to find those, you WILL have to dig a LOT of tabs and aluminum to get you share of the gold no matter what detector used.

If you do not want the upgrade then fine, don't get it. You are not compelled to go out and detect and find $25.00 and then have to pack up your machine and send it in for the upgrade.
I just bought one as well. Right about the same time you got yours and I'm sending mine in as soon as the opportunity presents itself.

No wooo is me here!

With all the noise that has been going on on all the forums about the upgrade you still went out and bought a V3 instead of waiting for the V3i. Too bad for you, you should have waited a couple of more weeks.

Yup, you are right, Sucks to be you.

I thought that if you bought your machine after 11/01/2009 the upgrade was free. The price of shipping is nothing if that polar plot works better than the analysis screen.

Save the shipping and don't get it. The V3 is a fine detector as it is, the upgrade is an option. I always try to be happy. If a lesser priced detector will keep you happy go for it. I'm not trying to get you mad I'm just suggesting that maybe you picked the wrong detector to keep you happy. I have an MXT also and it is a great detector at half the price. Buy what you need, be happy, have fun. Rob (the bad cop)

Both here and on other sites, people are hinting that for now the transfer feature is gone. This leads me to believe that somehow in the future it will be back. However, if it involves sending the machine in again (pack/ship/drive/wait) and paying $100 I'd just as soon not do this upgrade and wait for the one that brings back wireless transfer. For now, wireless transfer may not be used that often, but that may be because there arent that many Vs out there. IF you have a hunting partner, chances are he/she uses something else. My partner and I both have Vs so wireless transfer is a nice feature that I don't want to lose...if I end up having to pay/ship/whatever to get it back.

Hmmmmm...any inside guidance on this one?

Otherwise, I'm super stoked to get the upgrate for $100, I just don't want to jump the gun. :)

Only someone at Whites can answer that question. Rob

...but with a little experience you can even tell Buffalo Nickels from Jefferson Nickels.

After you become more experienced with the V3 (or V3i) you should start learning how to step it up a notch by changing some of the more advanced settings. By unchecking the "Normalize" feature in 22.5 KHz single frequency you can expand the resolution at the low end of the scale. This will make it easier to seperate nickels from pull tabs.

The same feature can be used for expanding the VDI scale for high conductivity targets such as silver and copper by switching to 2.5 KHz and turning Normalize to OFF. This enables the user to tell a clad dime from a Mercury dime and a Barber Quarter from a clad quarter.

Because it is learned by gaining experience with your detector. A solid VDI 19 with 3 green bars still doesn't always end up as a nickel. Just the same as a VDI 21 or 23 isn't always a tab. I dug some deep nickels today that had VDI nowhere close to what they should be. Now put that nickel next to another target and what will it read ??? Why do we dig signals that VDI bad but end up as gold rings. I'd like to see that put in a manual.[attachment 160333 Reading.gif] Rob
