Trip to Culpeper

rme

Member
My son and I spent 3 days MDing in Culpeper this week and found a few things even though the fields were waist high with grass.
I found the attached 3" HotchKiss round in almost complete condition. Is there a pro on the forum that can tell me if the round is safe to clean and prep for mounting as is or does it need to be disarmed. Is there someone else I need to contact to ask questions.
Thanks - Roy E.

This job has serious risks. I once realized that the thing I stabbed was the lighthouse's electrical wire. Luckily the blade didn't cut the cable shield.
Be very careful.
Congrats.

From what I read, that shell
had a paper timed fuse.
Looks like only the shell of the fuse is all that is remaining on yours… most likely water has gotten into it over the years and made it non volatile, but I am no expert on this.
It is a nice find and will make a great display piece once restored… congratulations!!!!
You may want to post this on the Civil War forum if you have done this yet…

If you are anywhere close to a military base ask if they station an EOD unit (Emergency Ordinance Disposal)there. DO NOT TAKE IT TO THE BASE!!!! Communicate with them and tell them you would like to keep it but need to insure it is safe, either they can complete the request or can direct you to someone who can. Second idea is your local police or sheriff or state police unit.
Usually the item is xray’d……
