Until I'm fortunate enough to dig a bust silver, if I'm ever that fortunate, buying one with a year's worth of dirt money will have to be my next best thing. $85, which I thought was a pretty fair price.
 
Good idea to convert your clad into something nice.
 
yup....i got a few of those too.
 
Steve, I didn't dig that coin. I bought it with my clad dirt money. And for the record, you're plenty worthy.

I understand that you bought yours -- which I think is a very cool, unique, and smart thing to do with your clad! Exchange that clad for something of more value! However, amc_rulz and greasecarguy said they also have bust halves -- and I assumed they dug theirs, which to me is just unfathomable! :surprised: I much appreciate the very kind words from you b2h; while I'm slowly learning to find some decent, neat stuff on occasion, some of the finds I see posted here and the stories that accompany them are almost unfathomable, and they remind me that I have a LONG way to go! But, that's not a bad thing, in my mind...challenges are good, as they help me to learn and continue to try to improve. Like you said in another one of your posts, persistence combined with a :minelab: is the ticket! :)

Steve, I agree with you about the finds posted here. Lurking this forum was what made me dump my Garrett for a :minelab:
 
Dont ask how but back in the eighties my dad dug a bust half in our high school ballfield..our city was founded in turn of the century. The ground was frozen..and it was like ten inches deep. He was using an old bounty hunter to boot. It was way deeper than any other coin we ever found in that field. We know we had a logging mill in the area in the mid 1800's. We figured an old logger must have dropped it. It sure was an unexpected find!
 
Hey Todd -- that is an OUTSTANDING story! First, congrats to your dad; second, it goes to show that the old adage "ya just never know..." is SO true! Incredible find -- and I bet you are right...that was probably part or all of a days wage for that logger! :)

born2hunt -- interesting that you lurked here for awhile, and the finds you were seeing prompted a switch in detectors. I assume your finds have greatly improved after you switched? ;) My story is different, but similar; when I started taking this hobby more seriously about a year ago, a couple guys I hooked up with were using E-Tracs (one of these guys is now my routine hunting partner). I was having the HARDEST time trying to hit silver, and just having no luck. I'd be in the same spots they would be pulling out Mercs, Barbers, etc. -- and I'd be getting nothing. After a couple of months of seeing the finds they were pulling from right under my nose, I switched to :minelab: !! I do not mean to imply that other detectors can't find good stuff -- obviously they can and do. But for my specific kind of hunting (old coins, in generally well-hunted, public areas), I strongly believe that there is nothing out there that can beat Explorers/E-Tracs -- and my improvement in finds is a testimony to that; I'm sure you experienced a similar improvement in quality of your finds (I SAW that seated dime you posted the other day...!! :) )

Steve, If I miss stuff with the Minelab, it's probably because I didn't put my coil over it. I made a lot of great finds with my first detectors but I had a suspicion that I was missing stuff with them that I was putting my coil over and the Minelab confirmed that. Not to slight Minelabs technology, it's probably the best there is, but I think the DD coil made the biggest difference.
 
I hear you, b2h. DD coils surely help -- but I rank the technology a bit higher, I think. There is something that Minelab does with their analysis of the multiple frequency information gathered from each target to arrive at an ID for the target, that to me sets them apart...

I LOVE this idea!! I haven't cashed any of my clad or pennies, yet. It's all just sitting around in jars and taking up space. What a great way to reduce all that bulk into one or two awesome coins!
