Some Excal's sound different than others. Mine sounds very different than my husband's, there is a couple of years difference between them. If you use Grey Ghost or different headphones other than the blue stock ones, the sound will be different. In my opinion, burry some stuff and learn the sounds that YOUR machine makes. It takes time and practice, listening to a CD that was made for one Excal may not be the same as yours. Also we all hear slightly different from the next guy.

John, I have had mine now for about 2 years I know when its a penny a dime and mostly when its a quarter. When they are Greene's they will make a little different sound I.E a green quarter will have a high pitch and a deeper tone. My advise to you and anyone for that matter is hunt often enough an you too will be able to tell. Trying to remember a sound a dime ,penny, quarter silver from a CD is really hard as the sounds (in the beginning) all sound the same. Mostly I don't know the difference between a coin and the sound of silver STILL. but Gold on the other hand is the sweetest sound of them all. Just keep digging the coins and you will see what I mean

I'm still learning the curve on my Excalibur 2 ,but I'm still looking for anything that will help me do a better job, I'm able to distinguish from a cap or pull tab dime or quarter, but silver still eludes me at times as does some gold finds...i swing my machine as much as i can,but I'm just looking for that extra edge...

Just practice, practice, practice. Not every coin or piece of silver or gold will sound the same, just dig everything in the discrimination mode. Pass buy nothing.........even a very large sound that you think is a soda can will turn out to be a piece of jewelry.
