took the GT out for a walk this morning

Good that you got a chance to try it out on some real coins.

A couple notes for you........

If you don't have boots on your switches, then get some. Dirt will destroy them pretty fast. A lot of the dealers have them. I know that Rick and David @ Dixie usually have them on hand.

If you're going to use silent search, you should try it with a threshold first to determine if your sweep rate and sensitivity settings are about right, and to establish if you have any areas full of small iron trash.

Hey Art,
How do I contact them to get boots??? I am heading for the beach I assume sand will mess the switches up as well. I did not know anything was available.

thanks Gonzo

You can E-mail Rick(ND) or David@Dixie of Dixie metal detectors.

I'm sure more dealers have them also.

Pretty easy to change on the GT.

A while back I posted a picture of my detector stand. Think you can see the boots in the picture. Subject line was "this will work".

yea art those boots sound like a good idea and i will be looking into them.
i knew the ground i was detecting in is pretty trashy. i ran with the threshold on for a while then started playing with the knobs and switches but i kept it in pretty much the basic modes. auto sens, disc, all the way counter clockwise and iron off iron on and threshold and silent. like back and forth. thinking now i didnt use the all medal or pinpoint . no ill have to get back with you guys on that when in the detect mode pinpointing was almost like a no motion pinpoint. thats how i was pinpointing when i knew where the coin was id back off it and move up on it and the coin was under the front tip.

You were way ahead of me on that one. You're doing a good job for getting a "feel" of things.

If you are used to pinpointing off the tip, then go with it.

I pinpoint in disc mode half the time myself. Sometimes do both disc and all metal around iron.

Thanks Art,
The boots were in the picture, and I am going to copy your stand as well, my buddy has a metal shop so that will make it easier. Remember "imitation is the most sincere form of flattery". I really appreciate that tip and this one.

Seen a lot of good, functional stands over time on this forum. As long as it works and don't get in your way.

That particular one will balance at 45 degrees on one leg with a 12.5 inch coil on the other end.

You could have the legs wrap around underneath a bit if you think they might bump you when swinging. Definitely made the stance wider than necessary.
