man it worked great. i just had it out in the yard where years back when i was learning the explorer i threw pennys, nickles, dimes and quarters all over my yard plus pull tabs as a test garden. set the sovereign up with the new meter on it and was hitting them real nice. the meter locked on well and i was ever doing the sovereign wiggle.
at the end of the week ill be talking a trip to the beach for a real work out. man im excited and cant wait. i really like this machine.

Glad you are impressed Stan.

You may not need this advise, but you don't want to tune your ears too much to those strong wide loud shallow hits.

Listen for the quieter hits, and don't confuse "softer" (loudness) with "lower" (pitch).

You won't miss the loud ones. They will scare your socks off.

The GT is a great machine on the beach. But if you go this coming week don't expect too much as the beaches here are really sanded in right now.

Enjoy your new machine it's a keeper for sure!!!!!

beachcomber, whats sanded in mean? is that when they pump sand onto the beach? i was going to go to long beach inland, nj.

While it don't bother me, I think some may get confused when it comes to seperating tone pitch and volume.

If you get used to the loud hits on clad and the weaker hits on small foil, you might start ignoring the weaker hits just because they sound weak. You may not be distinguishing between higher and lower pitched weak targets, but zeroing in on loudness only. You might tend to ignore them.

Make any sense?

Getting sanded in is caused by good ole Mother Nature!!! It's when we have a long period of predominantly NW winds here on the East Coast and the wave action pushes sand up onto the beach burying things beyond the reach of our detectors. Sometimes it pushes some light stuff like Pulltabs back in so at least you have some targets to dig :) Right now we could use some NE Winds to pull the sand back out again! Still it's supposed to be fairly warm this week and it's always nice to go for a walk on the beach and try out a new detector. There is always the luck factor and maybe you come across a nice gold chain or bracelet that was washed back in :) You just never know.

Like I always say the more you use it the more you will understand it and the better you will get with it.
I love now going to all these area others detectors have been over as i don't have to listen to all those loud signals as the new stuff is gone and can concentrate on the weaker and deeper signals. You will see what I mean after you get more time with this Sovereign, those weak and high tones signals will stop you in your track when you hear them.

Rick
PS. I think I have what you are looking for, but forgot to check this afternoon as I normally have 5 or 6 here all the time.

oh ok i see what you mean beachcomher. yea a nice walk on the beach is always a good thing and like you said with a new detector a pull tab can be a good target and who knows being at the right place at the right time just might produce a nice surprize.

ok art i see what you mean, but tell me this. on those weaker and softer sounds will my meter still read 180 if say theres a dime or a quarter down deep ?
stan pa.

The GT will give you the right ID without too much trouble on a clean flat coin that is very near the limit of detection.

When you get down to the very last inch or two the reading and tone may come up a little short. If you can tease up the target respone to where it is getting close to being right, then dig it.

Any time you get a weak hit that is almost right, go for it.

I like the ones that have a considerable jump in tone on the second and third passes of the coil. Means they were down there pretty far, and would not likely be trash. That's dirt hunting where target depth is fairly predictable.

Hi everyone and I am curious if anyone has used the GT with the Coiltek WOT 15" yet and if so what are your thoughts? That is what I'm trying to work with right now. Thank you and I hope everyone had a great Christmas. de John the Wirechief out Blackwell way.

Over the years I have tried a couple of them on my Sovereigns and for my hunting they were just too big for me and found the Sun Ray S12 worked the best for me for a big coil. From what I did use them I found they were clumsy to swing for any length of time, pinpointing was great, but never dug any real deep targets like i did with the S12. This is not saying the 15 inch WOT coil was bad, just it wasn't for me and my park hunting.

Rick

SORRY CANT HELP YA THERE BEING IM NEW WITH THE SOVEREIGN GT. BUT IVE HAD AN EXPLORER FOR YEARS AND AT ONE TIME I HAD USED A WOT COIL WITH IT. I FOUND IT TOO CLUMSY AND TOO BIG ALSO . I HAD TROUBLE GETTING THE SENS. UP HIGH BUT IT IDS TARGETS AND DID PINPOINT WELL JUST TO HEAVY FOR ME. THE SR-12 SEEM BIG BUT NOT TOO BIG AND WAS ALOT EASIER TO WORK WITH.

Wirechief,

Yes, I use the Sov GT and the WOT 15"...and I love it.

1. Just as sensitive/stable as the standard 10" coil
2. Maybe slightly deeper than the 10" coil (10% to 15% deeper)
3. It is a bit heavier than the 10" but I use the Swingy Thingy which works as well as they advertise it
4. Well made.
5. I use it only for the beach....the coverage is what I'm mainly after.

Hope this helps,
Tony.

Thank you for the response Tony and help. Since I'm located in the middle of nothing but farms and ranches in West Texas I want to use it for relics mostly. I hope this is a good use for this setup Tony. Ok CU later and nice to meet you. de the Wirechief.

you know what? i think im going to have to pick up one of those swingy thingys. i got a friend who has a sovereign with a Wot coil on it and i might just give that Wot a go around again. i had one for my explorer and sometimes if i wiggled it i'd feel the whole detector flex all the way up to the handle but when i get an extra 200.00 i will get a S-12 for my GT. i use the S-12 on my explorer and i love it.

This forum is great!!! So much great info and sharing of experience.

I just finished my last day of work for about 3 weeks (between jobs) so I plan on doing some detecting/learning in the yard for a couple days and then to the beach for about 4 days. I am finally going to have some time to spend with my Sov.

I am printing out several threads to take with me to the beach for reference, you guys are great, Thanks

Gonzo

great morning. had the GT at a local school and park .got everything pretty muddy but the detector was fine. found alot of clads. i not know problems with the pinpointing and i liked the silent search mode . it would be nice the have a remote switch and have the meter up higher but one thing i do miss is the probe that i have on my explorer. if its not in the first clump of dirt ,out came the probe. ill need to get the s-1 probe. other then that its a nice detector.
