Take a coin or other metal item, place it on an angle and then scan it with your detector. What you should notice is the pinpoint will be off to the side of where the coil is straight over the item.
If you take a bigger item, it will be even more off than what you see with a coin.
My theory is the the return signal is trying to line up straight with the flat of the coin or at least a compromise of straight over the coin and the other theoretical angle.
