Hi...
...I have the Toltec 100, mine is deep with the Troy X-2 S9 coil, the meter is very accurate but it is a top heavy beast that likes to fall over on it's side when set down. The TUNING is the Threshold volume that you set at a just audible setting when in the all-metal mode, I made a little mark on the dial face for that setting (sliver of tape). Here is how I set mine up, the DISC MODE...set to NORMAL,.... SENSITIVITY....set to 8....DISC. LEVEL...set to MIN....on the top of the unit there is a toggle switch, you have a choice of NORM TUNE or AUTO TUNE...select AUTO TUNE, now look at the toggle switch next to the meter on the right side, select ALL METAL ... next adjust TUNING to a just audible volume....now bob the coil from about 8" to within 1" of a metal free piece of ground, what is the threshold doing? If it goes silent turn GROUND ADJUST clockwise a little at a time until it sounds like no change in volume, likewise if the threshold volume increases, turn GROUND ADJUST counterclockwise a little at a time to get an steady threshold sound as coil gets close to the ground. A perfect ground balance is achieved when threshold does not change while bobbing the coil briskly towards the ground. Once ground balanced select DISC on the toggle switch to the right of the meter.
...SUPER TUNING the Toltec 100 is accomplished by increasing TUNING volume after ground balancing, hence the reason for a little mark on the dial (sliver of tape) it will ad another inch or two of target depth. A word of caution if you want to use all-metal after SUPER TUNING simply return TUNING dial back to the little mark or it will hurt your ears and all- metal is useless at a higher setting. Hope this clears it up somewhat.
