Time stir the Pot!!!!

Grumpy (Texas) said:
This is NOT meant to step on anyones toes BUT.....

Seems to me that a lot of people "push/brag" about the Excals... sounds like a lot of ex used car salesmen to me...

My points are 1. If they are so "good" why do you see so many for sale on the fourms and E-Bay"

2. I read post after post about the "sweet sound of gold"...and low and behold they found a ring.
thats great BUT I also read post after post about "Don't use any disc and dig everything IF you want to find gold.
IF thats the case, what happened to the "SWEET" sound?

3. IF you have to dig everything, and "MOST" pull tabs sound like rings then you should be getting the "Sweet" sound
a LOT. Its not that most pull tabs sound like rings...Its that some rings sound like pulltab rings and poptops

4. I set mine up as the"PROS" suggest. 0 disc, 12:00 on sens, volume all the way up, ligkt threshold in the back ground.
Dig only all repeatable signals..MAN what a collection of trash I'm getting...pulltabs of all shapes and sizes, nails, bobby
pins; rusty iron balls, little pieces of foil, and lots of just junk.

5. I have hunted for 5 weeks with the Excal 1000, and Excal 800 have found almost 3.00 in clad, one silver ring and 1 junk class ring (ULT)
my wife hunted with me those same 5 weeks with her HHPRO Wader and found over 15.00 in clad two 14k gold rings, four silver rings Is it possible that she has her discrimination on and you are in all metal?....Sounds like it if you are digging bobby pins and rusty iron balls
one gold chain two silver chains. This past Sunday my brother and my wife found 5 times the amount of clad as I did plus my
brother found a 18k white gold 1.13 ct tw diamond ring apraised at $3000. (he also uses a wader)

We all hunt tresh water lakes. my brother and I have been water hunting over 30 years. my wife only started this summer. I normaly
Hunt with a wader but my wife took it over (LOL).

SO WHATS THE DEAL ????? Is it mostly hipe on the EXCALS and / or are they not worth a flip in fresh water?

Grumpy (TX)
VERY GRUMPY

Hey Grumpy,
I use both the HHDiver and the Excal in freshwater. Turn that Disc up to 3 or 4 on the Excal, leave those bobby pins, nails, bottlecaps and other assorted junk alone, much like with your Wader. Wasting time digging that stuff in freshwater will drop your good finds down dramatically as there is way more trash in a lake than in the surf or sand, or so it seems to me. I've scooped both silver and gold with both machines and like them both. The Excal will get you the gold and silver just like the Wader if you get your coil over it and you're not wasting time scooping bobby pins, nails, bottlecaps and other assorted junk. JMHO, for what it's worth!!

BCD,

Thanks for the reply will try uping the Disc to 4.

Have another question for you, read a post about some stuff you found onn Belton lake. Which park do you prefer? My brother and I make a trip down there once in a while, try to hit stillhouse as well.

ok grumpy lets stir the pot some may argue but im gonna tell you the truth about this the excal. and the sov. are the same machine the real only difference is 1 is waterproof and one isnt i did read an article how to make the sov waterproof like the excal but i didnt want to risk it i have several minelab sov. machines and if you have your dials on your excal set correctly you should go null and void on small iron if your in the pp (pinpoint) mode you are narrowing for lack of a better term your search field its llike most vlf machines you hit the pp button and it goes into a vco mode oscillating mode which the sound or pitch gets higher and higher until you are over your target well in a normal search mode thats no good now im gonna stir the pot even more and people are gonna argue with me buti can show you the pics of the rings and chains ive found with pendants doing this so here goes the excal is a great machine in salt water or fresh as you said tabs and foil set your machine off left and right and your spending allday digging crap i want you to try this just for a few days . nickles fall into the gold catagory also did you forget about that?????? and on discrim nickles are uaually half to 3/4 on the far end of the dial that means you have 1-6 or 1-7 before you get to nickle take your machine and set it as you have been doing but not in pp mode make sure of that the 12 position is an excellent position to run your sens.thats where i run mine well between 11 and 12 for me i find i get to much depth well not to much but more then i want to dig sometimes its plenty deep as far as your iron listen to your thresh if it goes totally quiet or cracks alittle thats iron dont waste your time set your machine the discrim at 1 or 2 pref 1 to begin with everytime you pull up a nickle turn it up 1 setting now dont go to far once you get past 3 or 4 you will start missing gold however you will never miss silver if you turn the discrim all the way up you will still get silver id suggest 1 other thing also if you can get access to a platinium ring do a yard or air test and see where it fades out at you DO NOT WANT TO MISS OUT ON PLATINIUM NOW FOR EVERYOE THAT WANTS TO FUSS AT ME REMEMBER THEY USE NICKLE IN GOLD TO HARDEN IT so once you get your discrim to 3-4 i preffer 3 but thats your call tabs and garbage should have a crackle if the sound is not a good loud solid tone like gold will have pass it on so you dont have to dig everything theres 1 more trick you said your wife was finding all this stuff well they say if you arent finding nickles you prolly wont find much gold its all been dug in that area together ask your wife if she was getting nickles when she was digging that gold and if you dont find any nickles in a decent amount of time move on to a different area please excuse my typos its 4:38am here im alittle sleepy but trying to help also

Having used a Sov which is the land version of the Exal. time to put some time in with the unit and learn the tones and what they are telling you. Indeed the goodies have the soft mellow tone but hunting in the water I would run disc. low and dig all anyway as digging is easy with a long handled scoop. Only a matter of time before you start getting both silver and gold jewelry. On the other hand one wonders if your unit isn't faulty but a Minelab dealer or fellow club member etc. with Excal experience can help.
I feel you are truly overwhelmed by the tones being a newbie to the unit and surely one of the best water units made but takes time to learn..

If you are hunting in PP you are missing many targets as the field is reduced. I believe you see many more used Excals for sale is because most of the people selling them did not give themselves a chance to learn the detector. All that changing threshold tones confuses people so they cuss out the detector. These are the same type individuals that have the wrong time on the VCR because they don't know how to change it.

With a very low disc setting of 1, you are going to block out all the minor iron targets because of the Iron Mask anyway and the detector will respond to all other targets except maybe thin gold chains. An I do mean thin....... The sweet sound of gold is a little different than most pull tabs in the way the sound "ramps up and down again." Many hunters can not tell the difference in the tones and cuss because they scooped up another pull tab. Since your not digging hairpins any more, you are going to scoop up more gold if it is there. On some beaches I can only use Auto sensitivity and on others I can turn it up. Many times you are limiting your depth by using to much sensitivity. CJC in his books on the Excal and Sov explains this well.

Since beach goers don't always take a beer out into the water, the pull tabs are really not as plentiful as ashore in the dry sand, so just dig them and admire the nice gold ring you found in your scoop. :minelab:

Good Luck,
Sandman

I would say your gonna hit more targets in PP as the machine resets quicker from target to target and you get better depth. the only drawback is youll also be digging the iron and you dont have tone or meter ID.

now that would be a sweet sov improvement, give it tones and meter ID in all metal:cheers:
