I am researching a second machine. I was wondering if someone can tell me about the difference between mixed mode on the V3i and the Vx3. Are they the same type of mixed mode? And how exactly does mixed mode work? I think it is an all metal channel that gives ferrous tones in one ear and non ferrous in the other. Is that true?

The V3i has mixed mode and stereo mixed mode. According to the comparison chart the VX3 has only mixed mode.

This would be stereo mixed mode.

Mixed mode (not stereo mixed mode), sounds all metal audio when the incoming signal is not strong enough to trigger the discrimination system. When the signal is strong enough to trigger the discrimination system (big enough to be seen as a target), then it kicks into the target audio.

Stereo mixed mode is what you and Rob said. One ear always has the all metal audio, the other ear always has the target audio.

VX3 does not have stereo mixed mode.

I like hearing the all metal channel in both ears anyway and just letting the disc. chime in which overrides or comes in at the same time. Some Nautilus guys liked stereo mixed mode but I never took to it or ever use stereo in my v3i.

If that is the only feature missing the the Vx3 would do just fine. I have never used one so can't say what other features you would want or need.

I do not use Stereo Mixed Mode, but Mixed Mode is a must, not only for the additional depth but the width of the signal as well. An indirect hit may not trigger the Discriminate mode at all ( on the edges of the coil), but the Mixed Mode will have a threshold change. Often, centering the coil over these targets will give you a strong tone from the Discriminate channel; one that may have been missed entirely without Mixed Mode.
