Thinking of getting a backhoe

Got my AT back from Garrett yesterday after having the fix done on it for the falseing. Got a chance to try it out today. And I was turning the dang sensitivity down so much cause...well... I would have needed a backhoe to dig the dang things it was finding. One spot....set at about a 4 for sensitivity...showed a 46 at over 10 inches. Ok, fine...started digging...and digging....and digging....about 18 inches down...I was still showing over 10 or 12 inches...so I said the heck with it. Went up the beach...another hit...10 to 12 inches..showing 48...and solid..started digging...at 2 foot I gave up..and it was still showing...<sigh> Turned the sensitivity down and was happily digging stuff at about 10 inches or more...clad and junk mostly....no iron. And went back over those deep spots I dug and didnt get anything with the sensistivity down, but soon as I turned it back up I got the same hits as before. Something is there, but his old fart is not in shape to be digging to china...unless I can talk the county into letting me borrow their backhoe they got digging a water line trench in the campground. <laugh>

I dont mind digging...but I only had the sand scoop and digging much past 10 inches with that is ...welll... as much sand falls back in as you take out. There is something down there in those two spots. I know where they are so one day soon I might go back there with a shovel and do some serious digging. Likely is nothing more than some flotsam that got buried by a hurricane or other storm but that 46 and 48 numbers....make you wonder since that is in the gold range. and being so deep..could be old. So is something to think about. Found a piece of costume jewelry not far from that spot a couple days before.

Looking forward to the summer when the crowds really hit the beach and get out in the water. Water is still too cool for much more than wading right now, but in a month or so should be warm enough for the crowds to be in the water. And thats when the jewelry starts being lost. Might put on the wet suit and go out next week and see what I can find with the AT. My excaliber is still in for repair so though I have a whites PI, I really like the AT and I think it would do ok in the water. Will have to try it anyway.

The backhoe comments make me feel better about pinpointing. I'm just in my fourth hour with th AT Pro, and may have found an answer,for me, at least. Either I lower the sensitivity to minimum signal, wave the coil to center the sound, or [faster and easier] just raise the coil up to where I get minimal signal, wave the coil, and dig at the apparent center of the signal on the ground. I was almost spot on with this on a dime at 5 inches. I've done this with my Big Bud at different times. But I'll still try working on the other "book" methods to learn which one's best, or better,at least.

You can use the pinpoint button to zoom in on your target. If you press pinpoint and it rings over a large area, move the coil about 3 inches from the center of the target area, release the pp button and press again. Now it will only sound off over a much smaller area. Sometimes I have to do this several times, but eventually, the pinpoint will barely ring when I am dead center over the target. It's very accurate and saves a lot of time.
