thinking of buying a explorer

i have only been in the hobby for about 6 months but have always wanted to . i bought a cheap detector and have only a couple of coins.the trash is driving me crazy! so i have decited to kick out enough money to buy me a killer detector.i have heard alot of good things about the explorer, but after reading some of the comments on this site i'm about half scared to buy one!!i love going detecting and i'm in it for the long haul.but i don't know what i should do!!!!!t

Jerry - Hi. I started detecting in early September. The single and most costly mistake I made was buy 2 new detectors before I bought the Explorer. There was nothing wrong in any way with the 2 other units..they performed 100% to how they were designed.
One Saturday I detected alongside a guy USING an Explorer..that 2 hour experience resulted in a conclusion born of 2 significant facts.
1) There is no substitute for experience...and you can't buy it.
2) The Explorer in the hands of an experienced user is, quite simply, at this time, the best technology available
I was in awe at the stuff this guy dug in an area I had previously gone over 3-4 times using different settings and different detectors. He the day with a stunning silver Roman hammered coin + several other in bronze + Circa 17th Century items - strap ends, buckles, musket balls etc..and a big smile.
I had a few bits of agricultural debris and lead, felt frustrated and angry with myself
I stress experience matters a great deal..I'm still learning to Listen to the Explorer...as opposed to just hearing what's being fed to my ears
The point is - in that time, I realized I was handicapped in 2 ways. One I could do something positive about, the other would take..time & knowledge.
I owed it to myself, if I could afford it, to buy the best technology currently available. Having witnessed 1st hand it's capabilities..if I settled for anything less, every time I went out to detect, I would always know there was something better.
If you are Serious, you owe it to you owe it to yourself to equip with the best technology currently available. Currently..there is nothing (in my opinion) to equal the performance of the Explorer..nor the smile I now wear at the end of most dig-days!

After MDing with a Garrett GTAx1250 for the past year,I've done really GOOD.I've received my new Explorer XS on Nov.1.Since the past few weeks I just realized how much i"ve missed out on.The Explorer XS is really easy to run if you take your time and don't be in a hurry.Just start off in preset and learn all the sounds. It didn't take me long to start setting my own programs.I have A lot to learn about the explorer, but it sure makes it A lot of fun to learn on. Good Luck whatever you choose, Kenny Ray

After 10 years in the hobby my Explorer arrives tomorrow...to tell you the truth am a little bit
apprehensive in my ability to learn this unit and I have tried them all...With 6 months under my belt would be terrified. Perhaps you are getting
good advice but some of these fellows giving it had years of experience and they struggled with it
and even now differ on the best way to use it.Good luck in your choice and yes Guvner like it or not I am back after trying the rest..My sovereign days should give me some insight on its operation. Look for me now and then on the forum
once I get my feet wet....

lot easier than the Sovereign in my opinion.. the controls might take a while but the soimple detecting is easy to learn.. much easier in my opinion than the single toned machines that require you to dig everything till you get used to that tone quality.. in my opinion you can just turn it on in presets.. up the sens to manula and start finding things right way that veterans have missed for those same amount of years.. look at Charles posts.. he started in June and the explorer his first machine.. he has found more in the few months hunting already hunted sites than some people in the same area have found in the last 3 years

Reading the manual will indeed start with the presets, of course adjusting audio and threshold to my liking..probably boost the sensitivity a bit
and go from there. Have poor hearing but must have a knack for tones and audio varances so basically its learning the controls. Appreciate your confidence and with the advent of winter here in Pa. will know it likethe back of my hand come Spring. Like many I have used its as easy or hard as you make it. Definetly not a newbie to the hobby, but indeed a newbie to this unit...

I have only been detecting 5 months, the Explorer was my first detector...now look down. <IMG SRC="/forums/images/biggrin.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":D">

Two more barbers today, the 1901 looks like it just fell off the mint truck, very sharp edges. It was standing straight up on edge but the Explorer sniffed it out.

How come all of the responses to his question are from Explorer "newbies"? If I was excited about my "new" machine I would post that he should get one too. Where are the guys who have been using the Explorer for the last couple of years or more who can REALLY tell him what's up?

Hello Charles,
What a testament and revalation of what the Explorer can do.
Almost makes me want to go out and by another Explorer XS.
Talk about a picture speaking a thousand words.
I mean REALLY, who would need more convincing than this as to whether they should or shouldn't by the Minelab Explorer.
Thanks for showing us.
Have a good one.

Jerry,
If you are committed to this hobby for long term, get the Explorer. This was my first machine (bought last christmas) and I love it, never regretted it. It seems to me that some of the biggest complaints have come from 'seasoned' hunters ("old dogs"). They are set in their ways in how a machine should act and therefore complain when the Explorer doesn't sound or look like their old machines. You, on the other hand, don't have a pre-dispostion and you will be willing to 'open your mind' and learn the machine. I did, IT'S GREAT.

Jump in. The waters fine!!!! It takes a little time to learn but theres none finer. I have dug over $600.00 in clad alone in the last 7 months not to mention all the other stuff and it was my first detector.

thanks guys ,i'm sold i think i will give the explorer xs a try! you know it's nice to have a place where a person can ask some questions and get honest answers without somebody trying to sell you something. thanks alot you guys helped a bunch
