There has to be US Gold Coins out there waiting to be found?

I found a 1874 US Gold Dollar on Ebay. The coin had a hole drilled in it and I was going to buy it just to see how it would ID.Even in this condition the bids ran higher than I was willing to pay for a test coin. Ron
I'm thinking the best place to have a chance of finding a single gold coin would be in front of old stores when they have the sidewalks &/or streets torn up. If one was goping to a store knowing they were going to make a major purchase, they may have carried one. (MN)
My guess would be resort areas, especially ones that catered to the upper echelon of the day; places where people were likely to carry large sums of cash for extended periods. Remember that credit cards were not in existence and checks were usually only issued by banks and businesses.

On the East Coast my best guess would be places like Cape May NJ, Southampton NY, Martha's Vineyard MA.

Another good bet would be the old taverns, especially ones used as stage coach stops. It was a two day journey from Philadelphia to Cape May in the days before the automobile.

I have been spending the last few days looking at old postcards and have identified some new sites near my home that I never would have considered good sites.

DO THE RESEARCH!!

Your best chance to find a gold coin would be one that was made into jewelry and lost at the beach. Does it have to be one of the gold coins made prior to 1933? They're still making U.S. gold coins you know. There called American Eagle gold bullion coins. They come in 10th ounce, quarter ounce, half ounce and one ounce. Many of them are made into jewelry. Believe me, it would be just as exciting to find a modern gold coin as an old one.

Gold ID's according to purity size(width) and thickness. I've had a couple of gold coins in the U.S. and several Spanish and Portuguese of the 1600's though in live in the U.K. and have had perhaps only a couple of months detecting time in the States in the last twenty years. Secret is to have a top flight machine and then use almost none of the features you have paid for. Target probability meters are just no good for older finds. Maximum discrimination level should be small iron and accept you will have to dig rubbish.
