There has to be US Gold Coins out there waiting to be found?

With all the searching going on and the improvements in metal detector technology you would think we would have a better chance to find US gold coins.I haven't heard of anyone finding a gold coin in Michigan. Ron

I am aware of only one found 'round here and it turned out to be a very valuable territorial $1.00.It even had solder on it from bein a cufflink at one time and that did nothing to the value because it wasn't even know to exist before it was found. And then, Mr Kagin in all his arrogance, took it upon himself to name it after him and not the fella that found it.

Most gold coins especially lower value ones come in as foil, tabs and the like and are passed over. Certainly don't believe the number lost was large but am sure are waiting for the hunter to come along that digs all....I know of two found locally in Pa. and one was found when digging another target and the other found in an old change purse with silver coins...

Dan, Could Fisher have a good idea with their CZ3D? This unit in the enhanced mode may be able to find some of the more common gold coins? Think about the possibilities, all these places that are hunted out, which still have all these gold coins to be recovered. Ron

Jeff, What does the Canadian gold coins ID as foil, pull tabs or zinc? How often is gold found in Ontario? Ron

I really don't think many gold coins were used like other coins were. I feel the gold was kept at home more and not carried around so they would be lost less and when you did lose one of the $5 or bigger that was a lot of money and I am sure they went looking for them. With this being the case your chances of finding a Cache that were buried by those that didn't believe in banks would be greater than finding a single gold coin. The one that would be lost the most I feel would be the $1 or the $2.50 which are very small and like Dan says will read as alum foil and pull tabs which most will reject.
In my 34 years of detecting starting with a non disc a gold coin is the only thing I need for my full house of a silver dollar a gold coin and a diamond ring. I have heard of only 1 gold coin found in all those years around here and that was at a construction site where a house was being bulldozed. I heard rumours of a $5 being found by a young kid using a detector for the first time as he was digging everything.
I just don't feel many were lost as they were not carried like normal coins is why we see so very few found.

I agree with you, You just don't lose a gold coin back then and not really try and find it!! Just like these day and a 100 dollar bill, We just don't use them that much and don't lose them that much!! You may pick up a 1-$20 bill sometimes, but not a 100!!
Gold is like bronze here..foil is always a good sign of bronze and also nickle too! And the 3D does do a good job of ID'ing the bronze and getting them deep! I would think the same with gold!
These coins in the picture came in as foil..all over 300 years old!

True there are some factors that will explain why there wasn't as many gold coins to be found. But even with the lower quantity minted and increased value over the other coins there are still a lot of gold coins that have been lost and waiting to be found.I have been in this hobby since 1970 and haven't heard of anyone finding these coins except in ad hypes and contest.I won a gold coin (2 1/2 Pesos) in a planted hunt in 1977.My hypotheses is the metal detectors that are currently being used just don't work well for gold coins. Ron

Surely in advanced mode particularily the one and five dollar gold pieces are more likely to be found along with some oddball coins and tokens.Remember the area must be real old or the trash will kill you in enhanced mode.Doubt if there is lot out there to be found, but will bet many were missed by experienced hunters who went right over them or left them thinking they were trash..Indeed if they fell on most meters where common coins fall more would be dug even if they are scarce..Over discrimination can indeed be a problem and more than once hit a modern area where many nickels were found missed by those cherrypicking for high coins such as dimes and quarers,,,

You get them as alum foil with the CZ3D? I think on my Sovereign they come in as the IH pennies if I remember right. These are fun to find as you never know which dynasty they are from and have to look them up as they kept changing them every time a new ruler took over. It seem like someone finds one every month in our club and enters it in the find of the month for foreign coins.

My gold coin Id's as pulltab on all my machines. Gold does get found around here. A friend of mine near near Detroit in Ontario found 2 US gold coins on two different hunts out field hunting.

A gold 1849 $1 coin was shown and reported on the Explorer Forum in Feb 06. It was found in a city park in St Louis Mo. It got my interest by the fact I live by Pensacola Fl, an historical area dating from 1600. I have heard of Spanish coins found here but no US gold coins. If they can find them in a St Louis park why not here.

I did some research on gold coins minted by the New Orleans mint. I found that over a million $1.00 gold coins were minted there, 250,000 in the year 1849 alone. Other denominations were about the same, except $20 which was less. I figure that a substantial number of these coins migrated to the Pensacola area, being near and a historical major sea port. The $1 gold coin is smaller than a dime. We have sandy soil. If one of those yellow fellows was dropped it would disappear pretty quick. The $2.50 gold coin is just about the same size as a merc dime.
So whats the odds? I don't know, but I'm a lot more careful analyzing numbers and sounds when hunting with my Sov GT in old areas around Pensacola. Bad numbers may not be so bad after all. I figure that those N.O. minted $1 gold coins didn't all go to Texas, Miss., or Alabama. or stay in N.O.. I'm looking and hoping. HH Don

Just got back from detecting at a city park in Pontiac, just got a five inch coil for the Fisher cz3.This is a old park I was thinking about those passed over gold coins, anyway I found a half dozen wheat's oldest 1929.Got a hit on a strong target at the base of a tree.I dug down about four inches and recovered a 1906 Barb dime.Sorry about rambling I think too many of us do cherry pick for silver coins and we miss a lot of good finds. The manufacturer that makes a unit that specializes in gold coin hunting is going to have a hot product. Ron

That would be good if yu could just pick up gold on the detector..good hunting..the 3d dose do good on small silver too, but most units do! Go For The GOld! It's out there!

Yes, It is nice to get the Chinese coins because it is easy for me to date..The newer ones (1700-1800's) do have a higher reading on the scale, but I never find those. If I don't find the Japanese bronze coins (1620's-1700's) the Chinese coins here are older..all mine have been pre 1500's and they are lower on the scale around foil to nickle. Sometimes you can get one that rings high, but not that often. The Japanese coins between 1600-1700's stayed the same and is hard to date sometimes. Those are the ones I find the most.. Anyway, nice to hear from you! Dave

I have never seen one like the one you posted, looks interesting. I think most we find are in the 1700 range with a few in the 1600 and find they are hard to ID as so many different one were made.
Nice to find them as they are a piece of history.
