the x terra 90 :ausflag:

hi khouse,i bought the x50 and running it for the first time this morning i am well pleased with it's operation.however i had to fight of a lot of people who insisted it would have been better to buy the x70,which i don't need.if ever i get a chance to go gold detecting i would take my tesero vaquero, which is an all purpose machine.the x50 was bought pacifically to hunt for coins and jewellery in parks.the vaquero will do the same but it's a beep and dig. it tends to be slower digging all. blowfly hh

Get the 6 inch DD HF coil for prospecting and I think you would be surprised how sensitive it is. Coins and jewelry too.

From what I understand about metal detecting, 15 inches is about the largest coil that you can use before they lose the sensitivity to be able to find a coin size target. Any larger and they start losing the sensitivity to hear coins.
I'm not doubting the fact that that was what you were told, just that somebody who presumably been around the industry should say something like that. Perhaps they didn't want to say anything and just told you the first thing that popped into their head so as to not let on what is going on behind the scenes.

I found the email from a Minelab's support rep dated 15 May 08...pretty much seems cut and clear to me. Remembering that the 15" WOT coils are produced by Coiltek and that Minelab is not licencing the X-Terra coil technology out to third parties, it seems to me that a larger coil for the X-Terra won't be here anytime soon...I still would rather get a 11" SE Pro coil on the X-Terra. - cheers...Keith

"Hi Keith,

There are no plans to release a 15" coil for the X-Terra range at this stage.

I think a coil that size would have to be run with the Sensitivity so low, that it would remove any advantage a larger coil would give.

Larger coils work well on the Explorer/Sovereign, as they are multi-frequency detectors, and can handle ground conditions much better than single freq detectors like the X-terra."

Thanks Keith.
I thought that you must have been misled. Go to Coiltek's website and look up there 15 WOT coils. You will also find one for the Eureka Gold and Musketeer Advantage.

Wouldn't mind getting my hands on one of those babies, bet they are an arm and a leg....Thanks for the links...John

I agree with everyone else here. the X-70 is good enough.

However everything can be improved or atleast changed for marketing purposes.

There is now thousands of satisfied Terra 70 users out there and they are less likely to buy another Terra 70 then a Terra 70 SE......

Ofcourse the DD coils will be released in the new slimline design as the explorer and sov coils have.

Thats what I believe will happen, like what happened to the Explorer.

When it happens,, a manual on off backlight would be good, maybe double the segments on the ID scale,,

But the one single thing I wish most is ID capability in prospecting mode. Very few detectors have a very good prospecting mode like the 70 has and also ID capability in a constant reading flowting kind of mode. MXT, ID edge, F 75 maybe...

That would be a reasion for me to buy a new 70 SE.. and I think they want me to buy another one...

I E Mailed Minelab about larger coils. Their respose was that anything larger than what is available now would have sensitivity problems. I doubt if we will see larger coils, but improved coils are a good possibility.

Good hunting, John K

I think that's a cop out. I think they don't want to tool up for something that's so specific that they might have trouble recouping their cost. So what, if by using a larger coil you don't pick up those annoying bits of foil, pants snaps, or bits of wire. Granted, the UK crowd probably wouldn't want a real large one, because of the possibility of not seeing those small hammered coins they hunt for. In fact, now that I think about it, that probably has a lot to do with it. What about a compromise, like I've seen with other brands. Make a 10X12 DD spoke like coil and that way you'd get the depth without losing the small targets.

I use a 14x10 on my single Freq MXT and pick up air gun pelets!!! :twodetecting:
