having just aquired the x terra 50 and not even had a chance to run it yet i was thinking after talking to a minelab representive just recently about the x terra 90 and it's possible new up dates.he would neither confirm or deny it's possible planning in the near future.i said "what about a press button light that you could use after dark",he said hmm,i said what about ,he said lets change the subject ,nice weather were having, don't you think?oh yeah! makes me wonder ,what all you 70 operaters are going to do! alot of cheap 70's coming up! i think it stands to reason, first the 30,then the50,then the 70,and the ? what. hoo roo see ya ! blowfly hh

Other than a backlite and making it waterproof I can't see how you could improve on the 70 Maybe the Playboy channel that is fed in from satellite on the new color plasma screen? I would buy that...

I'll have to agree the backlight and water proofing would certainly be nice. On the other hand a large beach coil would certainly be a much added feature to the 70.

18 months ago, and replaced with the development of the X-Terra 100. In addition to the backlight feature, it will also include the following: AutoHunt Mode that allows the detector to operate without a detectorist, by use of Robotics, GPS and Segway technology; a compact refrigeration unit that keeps beverages and snacks chilled to exactly 38 degrees; a 42 inch flat screen monitor to allow the user to sit in the shade, drink a cold one, yet monitor the detector while using the AutoHunt Mode; a built-in backhoe to resolve the issue of targets being too deep for standard retrieval methods; and my favorite feature of all..... a self contained Finds Manager. This Finds Manager not only separates your finds according to conductivity and size, it actually cleans them via electrolosis, grades the coins according to JMBS standards, hermetically seals them in an airtight - transparent packet, catalogs them using the standard WTFIT system, and determines the current market value via internet uplinks provided by the satellite connectivity. When you consider all the benefits of the X-100, it is clear to see why the X-90 was replaced.

But I have to wonder...... you indicate that you believe a lot of X-70 users will be selling their X-70's cheap. If people only bought the higher priced models with more features, why did you get the X-50? You could of bought an X-70, or just waited for the X-100. HH Randy

There's no X-Terra 90.

There's also no need for one. This is a pretty complete detector with only a backlight and waterproofing missing. For a waterproof detector there's always the Excaliber. So far, I don't see too much competition against the X-Terra 70 which means Minelab aren't likely to offer an update for some time yet.

Did I say there's no X-Terra 90 yet?

And Minelab are much like Apple computers and Canon cameras in that they will not discuss models in development - whether they exist or not.

Seriously!

And that thing about an X-Terra 90... there isn't one. Not yet.

The reps aren't allowed to know about updates until they reach the marketing stages.

The more people titling their threads with "The X-Terra 90" = more people talking about the existence of one since "they read about it on the internet".

There are three models which are perfectly suited to the needs and price structure of the users who buy them. At the moment, I can't see Minelab introducing a new model until the competition gets stronger or until newer technology can be introduced. A backlight and waterproofing is very unlikely if they introduce a new model and want to keep battery life, performance, cost and weight down. We all know that the X-Terras can be affected by condensation... so what you should all be asking for is a "Nitrogen Filled and Sealed X-Terra". That's probably unlikely.

I'll let you know when there's a reliable rumor of an X-Terra 90.... until then... no. There's no X-Terra 90.

I have to admit though... it would be fun to Photoshop a fake one for you all and whack a picture of it in this thread.
I'm actually notorious for doing just this with other products on the internet. The only reason I won't do it is because it might affect Minelab sales and then someone would point them to this thread.

Digger, you were faster on the reply than I was.

Chalk me up for an X-Terra 100!

I scratch built this text for a YouTube video I'm working on. Handy!

it still couldn't tell you with 100% accuracy what was in the ground and until someone comes up with a detector that gives you the true image in the ground, they can add all the bells and whistles, it's still just another detector.....HH

This was a joint effort by Minelab and a U.S. based company.

But I don't think you will see it in a $500 hobby package very soon. Sell ~$800USD detectors one at a time to hobbyists or get on the real gravy train:

It doesn't matter if Minelab comes out with a 90, 100, or 150. I'm pretty sure that my 70 will still operate the same. No better or worse. A new machine may have a few extras, such as a backlight, which I don't give a crap about. But it won't be any deeper. That I know for sure. Maybe I would get the new model if it had something special that appealed to me. Maybe not. But it won't affect my 70, which is a super performer already.

I asked this same question awhile back and the reply from a Minelab rep was that it has been found that this size coil is far too sensitive on a single frequency machine such as the X-Terra. My 10.5" HF coil picks up such tiny things that I doubt the bigger coil would be able to separate targets well enough to be of much use. I'd rather see if they could put the Explorer SE Pro 11" coil onto the X-Terra as this coil is hot and has great separation for its size.

Personally, I'd rather see Minelab put their energies in developing a new Explorer model with an X-Terra-like case and faster processor. Backlight and water proofing would be nice on the X-Terra but imho it wouldn't be worth upgrading from the X-Terra 70 to this model. I personally find the X-Terra 70 to be about as good as one can get with current single frequency VLF technology.

cheers...Keith

If they can't put a 15' coil on the X-terra, then make the Explorer as lite as the the X-Terra. Yeaaaah!

I got to play with an X-Terra 70 a couple of months back and really liked it. The bottom line though; after thinking about it, I don't think that it will make much difference to me over the performance that I get out of my 30. At least, for the type of hunting that I do. Sure, it could run rings around a 30 in certain conditions, but simply not enough to warrant the purchase of the 70.

I think the X-30 & X-50 have their own niches cut out for them. The only obvious differences that the X-70 offers is Ground Tracking and Prospecting Mode. I think it's good that there's three different options so people can choose the detector that's right for their needs. in the end, they're essentially all capable of detecting metal. People just need to get the model with the features you are likely to want to use most.

I would have been content with the 50. It was a sweet detector. But I got a good trade for a new 70. I was hoping to prospect in Colorado and beach hunt in Florida this summer. I haven't done either.. So sad.....

Does that X-Terra 100 come with an optional easy chair and shade ? If so put me on the list. All kidding aside, I love the X-70. A backlight would be a nice feature. Maybe Minlab could upgrade the 70 somewhere down the line with a backlight and still call it the 70. There is no reason that a small LED could not be rigged up and taped to the screen if you wanted to see the numbers. I'm thinking about working on one for mine. It would be easy enough to do. In the mean while, those LED headbands work pretty darn good when needed.

Good hunting, John k

You could use the sticky velcro without the clip for the Xterra's. I buy these lites on ebay cheep. But you could go with a high price Photon lite. Remember use red or green for night vision. You can see in the last picture there is an off/on switch. Make sure yours has it. You can also strap one on your shaft to lite up the coil. Plus you can pull it off to look in your hole if needed.

Interesting thread with some really funny responses and some quite reasonable too.

I really like the led add-on above as it would really make things a lot easier whilst hunting in the diminishing later day light.

I for one would love a backlight on mine,,,, maybe one in indiglo blue or deep red possibly. It would also be interesting if a person could control the brightness of said backlight with 3-4 incremential user selectable settings like off-low-medum-high. Oh yeah,,, put a clock display on the screen too... I don't know if this was mentioned before but how many times I detect my watch gets in the way= Beep Beep Beep ,,,or I have to carry my cell phone while I am detecting on my lunch hour wondering what time it is hoping not to be late getting back to work. A small digi clock display on my X70 would be bliss for me at least.

I second the motion for a clock. Like I said before the Playboy channel would be enjoyed by myself also.
