The V3 is a battery eating machine!!!

I bought some Panasonic Oxyride AAs to try with it. They are really good batteries. They start out at 1.7v so that they level off around 1.5 and last a long time... in most detectors. I used the V3 today for about 4 hours, about half the time in HiPro and half the time in Coin & Jewelry. Switched out between the D2 and the 5.3.

The voltage started out around 12.7
I checked the voltage after the hunt... it was 7.5 but... it was still working. I don't know how deep it was going though, maybe thats why everything I was finding was about 2" deep at the last site.

I think I am going to stay with the rechargable pack. Maybe I should make one of the 2800mah packs.

I'm not sure but I think that the rechargable may last longer than the alkaline, even with the Oxyrides. How long do your batteries last?

I've hunted with Larry this weekend and he hunts a long time in one day. I know we hunt 8 hours for sure in a day and my rechargeable pack was still reading in the 9v range. I believe the pack is 1600 ma. I run the back light at 2 and turn down the phone transmitter to 5. Both these will extend the battery.

I made a 2500ma pack since and it works great. I haven't tested how long it will last. It charges great just like the factory pack. Rob

there is a setting in the advanced to change the battery types. I don't know if it is applicable in this instance to your batteries, but might bear looking at. I'm guessing it has something to do with how it reads them?

I stopped using the wireless headphones turned the backlight down to 3 and my battery seems to run for a full days teckin with no problems !!!

regards rob

I turn the backlight off completely. It's still plenty visible in daylight. I don't know how long the battery lasts, but I've hunted a half day at a stretch with it and not ran it down yet. Lately I've been hunting a couple of hours at a time, and I charge the battery every third or fourth time, just because I figure it's about time to. I don't run TX boost much (just don't seem to need it -- found an indian head penny over a foot deep without it), but I do use the wireless headphones. I have no complaints about battery life.

I reset my backlight a while back but I didn't turn it as low as some because, to my eyes, it makes a difference... but i'll try lowering it or turning it off again. I haven't checked my headphone setting but I will. I may have to switch to some other phones anyway. I really like the wirelesss phones except for they hurt my ears. The cuffs aren't deep enough for me. They sure do sound good though, much better than the SR Golds I have.

I'll check that setting in advanced too and see if it makes a difference between alkaline and rechgs.

I just expected more out of these particular batteries and maybe i'll get more if I set it for lower power draw.

Here's some info rcsnake posted.

TX Boost with the 2.5 kHz frequency will give battery life of 4 hours. The backlight will draw around 65 mils at (20). At a setting of 1 to 3 the current draw is not a concern. I usually run the backlight off. The current draw for the wireless transmitter is 7 to 15mA at 10V. I use a power setting of 5 to 7 on the wireless headphones.

The battery setting might give a little more accurate reading but won't make much difference. Rob

I get 6hrs out of mine running tx boost at the beach with wireless head phones. Still had battery life when I quit after 6 hours.

I have been running mine with full backlight and close to stock settings. Play with TX some and quite a bit of single frequency. 7 hrs. on avg. Have an additional rechargable and don't worry about it much. I have found that one of the batteries is holding a charge better than the other and the poorer one is slowly holding a charge better with each use?

Page 47 in the manual, item 6. I've never run mine higher than 5 with no trouble. The higher the setting the higher the ma draw and shorter the battery time.

Also in the manual, the modulation instructions on page 36 are wrong. They are backwards. 0 is the most modulation, and 5 is the least modulation.

I have been metal detecting for 40 years now. Most of the detectors I've used have been White's or Tesoros. I currently use an MXT300. One thing I can tell you through experience is that Panasonic batteries are worthless. They are cheaper because they do not hold their charge. Get Duracell alkalines. They have proven to be the longest lasting batteries for me. About 50 hours on the MXT.

I can't run my wireless headphones either because they're uncomfortable. I leave my backlight on its highest setting and use KB II's...The NiMH pack lasts about eight hours of hunting time. No problems.

In normal daylight, I turn the backlight off entirely. It just doesn't seem needed. The couple of times I've been out after dark, I've only had it at two or three. (Any brighter and it makes you feel like a deer in the headlights. :) ) I'm not sure how much battery is saved by not using the backlight, but I'd turn it off anyway (like I said, it just doesn't seem needed unless it's dark outside).

I had this weird issue about a week ago. Took the battery out of the charger, installed it and headed out to hunt. Within an hour the battery was dead (4V) and the detector shut down. No TX boost, backlight on 1, headphone transmitter on 5. popped in the Alk's and went back to hunting.

I figured I eneded up with a bad battery but it hasn;t happened since. infact I seem to be getting better charges now. I hunt 5 hours and still close to 11V.

Do they hurt the hard part of your ear? That is what mine do, and FWIW, my ears don't stick out. I am going to try some thin weather stripping inside, under the cuff to see if I can get a little more room in there, it won't take much. I really like the sound of them.

I've been turning it off too. I think that will help. I have not used it in over a week. I let a friend borrow it. He sent his "vision" in for the upgrades and he really likes the V3 so I am letting him use mine until he gets his back. I will use my E-TRAC if I get out... maybe tomorrrow... there's always tomorrow...
