The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly about the v3 after 90 days

Hey, everyone,

It's now about 90 days since I got my VISION (now known as the V3)

I'm no expert, so my opinions may not be worth much to anyone, but here they are on the V3 so far:

The GOOD (in no particular order)

*I really like the color bars and the analysis screen. They have told me to dig where I was uncertain, and where not to dig when the signals were confusing. I'm learning to tell the difference between junk and "the good stuff." I still get fooled every now and then, but every hour out with the V3, I'm learning more about what it's trying to tell me.

*It's incredibly easy to change settings. When I decide it would be a good idea to bump something up, or back something down, I can do it in just a few seconds, on the fly.

*This machine is a BEAST when it comes to copper. Old copper just bangs on the V3. I have found more than 70 wheat cents in the past three months. It's better on nickels, too, than the XLT that I had for the last couple of years. A couple of my V3 detecting friends are finding gold jewelry. I'm not, but then again, I don't like digging those low "foil" tones very much, so, unlike my friends, I'm not giving myself that much of a chance to find gold. As for silver, I think that when I'm over it, I find it. The challenge is just to find places that have it. Yesterday I got a 1951 Rosie, though, so that broke my recent silver slump. My deepest silver coin so far is a dime at 7 to 8 inches.

*The 5.3 coil is fantastic. It's light and deep, and the trash separation and pinpointing are great. I find myself using it way more than the 10DD. I'm still thinking about picking up a 9.5 though, for larger areas, as I just seem to like the concentric coils better.

*I didn't know if I wanted the cordless headphones at first, but now I wonder how I would do without them (kind of like the color screen!) They permit easy setting down and picking up the detector, reaching for tools without getting tangled in the cord, and switching hands. They're comfortable and don't give me the ear fatigue that some of my other headphones have given me in the past. Changing batteries is quick and easy.

*Finally, as just about everyone agrees, there is no substitute for the outstanding service that White's gives people. From the person who answers the phone, to the people who work on the detectors, the engineers, and the others that I've met, all of them have been incredibly friendly and helpful. I'm lucky enough to live less than an hour away from the Sweet Home factory, and I know that if I take my detector in, I get service beyond any other company I've ever dealt with in any way. I've had the opportunity to go detecting with one of the engineers (don't know if he wants me to say who) and he is one of the nicest and most helpful guys there is. The service alone makes the detector worth more to me than any other brand.

THE BAD

Hmmm, I'm not sure what I can say in this category. The one thing I wish were different would be that there would be a far more in-depth owner's manual than the one they have provided. For example, just yesterday, I learned some things about ground filters that are not in the manual. I got my knowledge by reading this forum! I realize there's no way they can put everything into a book, but I guess I'm ready for a more thorough resource than the current owner's manual. Maybe by Christmas???? In the meantime, this forum is a great way to pick up knowledge that goes beyond what is in the manual.

THE UGLY

Since I got my V3, my old detecting friends have stopped calling me and inviting me to join them. This really hurts my feelings! They go on their "road trips" knowing that I enjoyed those trips as well, but now I'm not invited. One time I sort of just showed up, but they pretty much ignored me. I got the message. They all have Minelabs. To me, that shouldn't be an issue, but for some reason it seems to be an issue to them. I've quit going to the local club meetings because of the hurt feelings, and I'm not going to beg to be included in the outings. Instead, I've made some new friends and we will continue to have good times detecting.

So here's the bottom line for me after 90 days:

If you like detecting with serious power, having the best on-screen information, the easiest changes of settings, the convenience of color read-outs and cordless headphones, the V3 is definitely worth considering. Yes, it takes time to learn how to use it. I'm not sure mine is totally fine-tuned yet to the conditions that exist in my part of the world. I'm still playing with it. If playing with your detector's settings is part of the challenge and fun for you, the V3 is an easy one to like. I highly recommend it!

Thank you, Whites, for making the V3, and thank you, all you forum contributors, for helping all of us to understand and enjoy our new detectors. We have yet to discover the limits of the V3. Every day is a new opportunity to see what our detectors can do. I hope that as people make their discoveries about settings, and about how various settings combine to give even more power and/or accuracy, they continue to post them so we can all learn.

Thanks for reading this; I look forward to your responses.

Really nice writeup Mike...The V3 is the Best machine out there and i beg to differ with anybody whose thinks they have something better.
As for your so called Minelab friends they are just jealous so don't worry about them.

I am no authority at all. I've had my V-3 for more like 5 days.... but i've been doing a lot of testing with dug targets, trying to learn it. I noticed one thing about the analysis screen that troubled me. Several CW era buckles, one frame and one complete harness buckle... and a couple of other buckles, (not plates), the analysis screen looked horrible one all of them with dips etc... really ugly. I thought to myself... I probably wouldn't have these buckles if I were using the V-3...

Now, I know that is not a fair statement because I have only used it in the field for a couple of hours and maybe after learning it a bit I will dig those targets, but, from where I am now... that troubled me a little.

Have you dug any old buckles? Remember, i'm not talking about belt plates or box plates, but open frame buckles.

Thanks,

Julien

Thanks Mike for a fine write up and your honest opinion about the V3.
Not every report is gonna be good.
The V3 is a strong detector but it still aint perfect.

It is too bad about your friends.
You seem like a nice guy.
I can not understand someone that acts like that.

Hey ... make a road trip down here to Corpus Christi, Texas and we can hunt the beaches.
I will hunt with you regardless of what you use, even electronic dousing rods ... lol.

Seriously, Mike, it sounds like your MD friends were not really your friends after all.

Good luck to you and keep sharing what you are learning on the V3.

The ugly part about your friends is what makes me mad. I could care less what machine anyone uses. In fact I have helped people with many different brands make better finds. Usually just coil technique and lowering the disc. and sens. What, do they have a ML club only? Or are they scared you'll find more stuff? Either way your better off without them. Man that gripes me! You need to go to the meetings with your machine. Surely everyone there's not jerks?

Wow...

I sort of scanned when I got to the "ugly" part. I didn't really read it I assumed you were making a joke about people not wanting to hunt with you because the V-3 is so good.... then I came back and read the newest responses... and then I re-read your OP and well... that's really crappy of them.

First don't call them friends. They were never friends if they were... they still would be and they would act like friends.

I guess my world is pretty small, I only hunt with a couple of people... I don't understand that at all. I do know that you are better off without phony friends. You can bet that they would never have been there if you really needed a friend. I think a small world is better than a small mind, like they obviously have..

I hope whoever you find to hunt with will be a real friend. Don't give up on people. That these people are worthless doesn't mean all people are, apparantly you are not like that because, well it's obvious.

It is easy to become jaded by of the deeds of fools... but don't let it bother you... One thing is sure: You cannot be responsible for what other people do, you can only be responsible for what you do. It is their loss in my opinion.

Hey all,

Thanks for being supportive, but I hope I didn't give anyone the wrong idea. These guys have been my friends for a couple of years and I'm kind of mystified about what happened. I didn't mean to make you think they are jerks or anything. What concerns me the most is that the simple act of buying a detector different from the one they chose could seem to cause such a change in people's behavior. I don't think they're jealous, as some have suggested. They have pretty nice detectors, and are having some great success finding old coins. I'm not really sure what's going on. But anyway, I've found some new friends and that is a good thing!!!

Good write up!! Don't worry about those guys, if they don't come around, they weren't really friends.... :surprised:

in response to JBow...

I dug 2 brass colnial buckles that had the rusted metal center thing (what is that called anyway?) and they didn't analyze well but gave excellent search screen signals and VDI #s. I am guessing the rusted iron threw the detector a curve ball. However, I just about never use the analyze screen when hunting for relics. The only time I do is instances like this morning where I was picking up a lot of can slaw that read the same as bullets. Then the analyze screen was able to tell me it wasn't a bullet. I generally hunt in the single freq. 7.5 when going after relics. When I got into this trashy area, I switched back to three freq so I could analyze. I have noticed the 7.5 likes rusted iron better than the others too.

Really enjoyed your post Mike. I'm using that little ol' 5.3 too and re-evaluating my hunting past! Glad you are getting some good time in with the new toy and don't worry about the ML guys...What's there to say about that? (They measure everything by 28... and 3 is bigger...frequency envy I guess?) Just kidding!!! Plenty of people, with other brands, don't play that tune. Enjoy that machine and the possible checking out of the ET!

people, geesh, and Ive been wanting an ETrac.... well whatever,,, if you are ever down Louisiana way, give me a call, Ill hunt with ya. Its not all Minelab users cause I hunt with some, just some folks are narrow minded.
Best,
John

Excellent post, Mike. True friends won't even "notice" what detector you have...they just want to hunt with YOU. :twodetecting:

Here in Central Illinois, we seem to do just fine hunting with MDers who own several other brands. I guess I'll be more thankful of that now!:cheekkiss:

Good luck and let us know the goodies you find.

Hi, all,

A while after I wrote this, I got a call from one of the guys I mentioned in the original post, which went a long way in clearing up the misunderstandings. The day after that, I got an e-mail from one of the other guys. Turns out that at least most of us are OK with each other.:buds:

I spent the whole day today hunting with one of the guys, and we had a great time, just like we used to.

Highlights of today's hunt for me were what my wife says appears to be a marquesite ring, and a 1943-S war nickel, along with a bunch of clad.

The post has served its purpose in that I was in a position where I couldn't call them because it would seem like whining. When they figured out there were hurt feelings, most everyone tried to make things right.

Now I am doubly blessed, because I was able to make new friends, and have managed to keep at least some of the old ones, too.

Thanks to everyone for the support. This is a great forum with lots of friendly and helpful people.
