This another myth I've seen in several posts by armchair experts. I've been involved with this project since the middle of 2009 and we are approaching the middle of 2012. The project was already underway when I became involved, and I'm going to guess it was already underway for at least one year, and maybe two years before that. You don't wake up one morning and decide to build a new detector this complex and have it ready to go in 6 months. Alpha and beta testing has been underway for about two years and then field trials probably starting a year ago.
Not many years ago 28% of the U.S. jobs were in manufacturing, today it is only 8% of U.S. workers. Therefore 92% of the workers in this country have no idea what it is to design and build something, and you know what, many of the posts here reflect that fact. It all looks easy from the cheap seats!
