:tesoro:ARE DETECTORIST BEING RIPPED OFF ON EXPENSIVE HEADPHONES?

I am begining to think so,I Challange every detectorist to barrow a family members pair of I-Pod,or any other pair of earbuds,,(The style that is inserted into the ear canal,i had to go through differant brands, untill i found the ones that would hold up,found JVC Gummies, sold at walmart to be very durable, they are coated with rubber, and rain does not seem to effect them,so small you could fit ten pair in your front pocket with room to go.The miniturized speaker in each ear is so close to the ear canal, that any faint signal will be heard, even while on the beach or any other noisey area, you can talk to people without taking out,you will not be effected by heat,or weight like the getto blaster style head phones, try them for one week and see what happenes, let me know.Chuck.

but what bothers me is that the little speaker that is in each side can be purchased for about 90 cents each if you buy a hundred or about a $1.30 each if only one or two are purchased. I purchased my expensive ones from board sponsors and they have serve me well.

Chuck try those at the ocean and you will see how important it is to have outside sounds blocked. the ratphones I use block sound really well, I dont feel Ive overpaid on them at all.

Thanks for yhe input,do not have a so called pair of headphones yet,i hunt on the beach all the time with my $10.00 earbud gummies all the time, like i said i can talk to people, listen to the birds, waves and gold rings at the same time.My biggest problem is what flavor, red blue, green purple....well any way,oh wait forgot to tell you, read something somewere about how earbud style heaphones use less power on the detector than getto-blasters,detector power is not free unless you have a solar charger for your batts.Well any way could not imagine anything but my gummies,am i a dummie?.Chuck.

Neil the problem with my Rats is every time a detecting bud wants to talk to me
i have to take ear cup off to hear them but thy can here me with other brands on

Well.....Let me tell something that I have never said publicly on any forum.
I have big ear and they stick out. I know. When folks read my post they picture
me as the Robert Redford, Gary Grant type of a guy, but I'm more of the Mickey
Mouse type. Because of the angle (my ears also stick way out), buds tend to slip off.
Cheap head phones tend to make my ears sore. Not from the sound just from
the pressure of them sitting on top of my ears (rather then around them). Gray Ghost
were the best so far but they could have been a tad deeper in the cup. I just traded
those for a pair of Black Widows because I wanted volume control which the Grey
Ghost didn't have. Haven't hunted with them yet.
Now I think when it comes to headphones I'm a expert and yes they do add to the
quality of signal especially when it comes to whispers or faint signals....A year ago I was like
you Chuck. Figured it didn't matter. Headphones were headphones. Then I went hunting
with a chap who had a good quality pair of headphones and I compared my Calrad's
with his on my detector while pinpointing a weak signal....While the Calrads signal
was weak and hard to hear, the quality pair made the signal smooth and louder.
Well. ....Just my two ears worth. And thats a lot! Dang

Every has answerd the detector speaker question, then it is not really needed, good phones when not worried about surroundings, earbuds when you need to hear surroundings,i think i will get me a pair of those getto-blasters.Thanks for the help,Chuck

I wrote to major metal detector dealer and asked him "off the record" if those expensive headphones made for detectors are really all that much better than regular store bought phones.

His reply was "no." He told me most any WalMart phones were just as good and a whole lot cheaper.

I've been given some top brands with the purchase of some detectors. I tried them and simply put most on ebay. I used a cheap set from Radio Shack (like $20) that were much more comfortable and sounded just as good as any of the $100-$150 phones. In fact I still have them as they are extremely well built.

With my new Tejon the dealer gave me a free new set of "Nugget Buster" headphones (ca. $100 retail) and I really like them.

But to be candid I don't think the phones are all that much of a big deal. I've never read where Tesoro has placed any emphasis on those expensive phones either.

The important thing is comfort and reasonable durability.

Dang..Try the Minelab 30's headphones..Their to big over my ears.....And I want to add........I have used expensive, and cheap..I really do not hear any difference in the sounds audio. I did hear the difference in each set I tried tone quality..Some sounded better than others..But none ever made me feel like I was digging deeper targets that I could not hear with any set I owned..The better phones mellow out the target and take out the shrill tinny like sound...

You sure have made a lot of posts for the amount of time you have been registered. But, that is good. I prefer no headphones. I do a lot of relic hunting in the woods and the cords just catch on everything. Good headphones will help you get the faint signals. If I were coin hunting I would get some good headphones that cover my whole ear. You can keep the "gummies" their not for me. A friend who was a professional treasure hunter and diver once told me that the headphones were great because they keep kids and people away because he just pretended like he couldn't hear them. That made a lot of sense to me, although I have never been plagued with people bothering me while detecting. Now for the price of headphones. Some of the prices of headphones are way overpriced. I use a $20 set that I received from a tech. at Tesoro and they work fine, even have a volume control. Although the small amount of current used will barely reduce battery life, batteries are cheap and my time is valuable. I have been detecting for 38 years, but I'll be darned if I am going to spend over one hundred dollars for a set of headphones. Much of my detecting is done in a farmers field right next to a major Interstate Highway (Hwy. 44) and that is loud. There are trucks, sirens, cars, and all sorts of traffic noise and I can hear faint signals just fine with my $20 set of headphones.

Chuck youve got better ears than me then, God bless you:thumbup:

I tried ear buds, walkman type phones, none of em would block out the waves when working low tide line so I could hear the deep ones. Only the GG,Sunrays,Rats, timberwolves, thats all Ive found that worked well for me. Even the UR 30s supplied by minelab with the Explorer dont block enough.
Good for you man!

The one-sided Gray Ghost Rattlers appropriately named for obious reasons would allow a person to keep one ear alert for certain sounds, including other people if you are in a potentially dangerous area. Of course you are going to hear everything else as well, but it's a trade off.

I like the sound of the ML 30s but they are HOT in the summer. When I find a pair that's cooler I'm going to pull the spekers and change them out.I usually use a lightweight pair at 60 degrees and above. I thought about the ear buds but I'm thinking a limb would catch the cord a jerk them out.

It Still seems everyone has a serious problem with headphones,I Think I've come to the conclusion, along with badger, yall got ripped off haaahaaaha:rofl:

There is such a variety of headphones available, if one gets ripped off, then I think the wrong choice was made. Also, what may be a rip off to one may not be to another.
Now talk about headphones, I really like my Grado RS-1 headphones. Awesome - For the home stereo of course. I'm glad it was something my wife got for me as a gift because I probably wouldn't have bought them. They are great, but not my choice for detecting.
But I guess I can say I been ripped off in a way because there are a couple dozen headphones laying around here. There are some I use and the rest the kids can use. So for the ones I bought and use, I feel I did good. The others, I ripped myself off.
I do have a few of those little bitty ones that work okay - but I prefer some of the full size headphones. And I always have used headphones since I got my first detector years ago.

Well, I've always been a believer that if YOU like it, You use it. Personally I like the better headphones so I use'em.
